Ward H. Coon
Age 88, a lifelong resident of Owosso, Michigan passed away Friday, October 11, 2024 in Alma, Michigan surrounded by his loved ones.
Funeral services will be held 1pm Thursday, October 17, 2024 at Nelson-House Funeral Home with Rev. Russell Merrill officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends Thursday from 11am to 1pm.
Ward was born May 7, 1936 in Owosso, the son of Russell and Amy (Craft) Coon.
He graduated from Owosso High School in 1954 and later attended Lansing Community College, and received his bachelor’s degree from Spring Arbor College. Ward proudly served in The Michigan Army National Guard and The United States Army Reserve from 1953 until April of 1987. He joined the National Guard while still in high school as Private and retired after 34 years with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
Ward was a life member of the Owosso Masonic Lodge #81 for over 40 years, a life member of the Perry Masonic Lodge #350, a member of the Elf Khurafeh Shrine Club and Fire Brigade, a life member of Order of Eastern Stars Fenton Chapter #248, a life member of the Shiawassee Community Radio Watch, a member of the National Sojourners John S. Bersey Chapter#316, a life member of the Shiawassee Valley Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #317, a member of the Retired Officers Association of Michigan, and a member of the Shiawassee Veterans Honor Guard.
He married Jacqueline Mae Phillips in Owosso on June 18, 1955.
In 1965 Ward joined the Owosso Police Department serving for over 25 years as a Patrolman, Sergeant, Deputy Chief, Chief of Police and as Direct of Public Safety. After retiring from the City of Owosso, Ward joined the Shiawassee County Sheriff’s Department in 1990, serving as Zoning Enforcement and Emergency Coordinator. In 1992, he became the Chief of the Perry Michigan Police Department where he served for four years.
Ward leaves behind, his wife of 69 years, Jacqueline Coon; his four children, Jeffrey (Rosie) Coon, Russell (Sheryl) Coon, Becky (Robert) Holdridge, and Peggy (Carl) Stevens; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren; along with many other loving family and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Russell Coon and Amy (Craft) Nold.
The family would like to thank the Michigan Masonic Home Team for the wonderful care and support they gave to Ward and continuing care for Jacqueline. (Keeping Ward’s scooter speed down was a challenge, but certainly improved public safety.)
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to The Michigan Masonic Home in Alma, Michigan or Heartland Hospice.
