BORKOVICH, Walter - Of Burton, age 82, died Friday, December 9, 2011 at Hurley Medical Center.
Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, December 12, 2011 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, 2143 South Center Road, Burton,
Father Matthew-Peter Butrie officiating.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery with a military service under the auspices of VFW Post #822 Honor Guard.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to St. Nicholas Orthodox Church.
Saturday’s visitation will take place from 5-8p.m. at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint. Sunday’s visitation will take place at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church from 2-5p.m. and 6-8p.m. with a Parastas Service held at 7p.m. Sunday evening at the church. Family and friends are welcome at the church from 10 a.m. Monday with the service following at 11 a.m.
Walt was born in Flint on June 21, 1929, the son of the late Luka and Mila (Kapor) Borkovich. He graduated from Bendle High School, Class of 1947. Walt served as a Private in the United States Army during the Korean War, stationed in Germany with the 2nd Armored Division based out of Fort Hood, Texas. Walt then married Allison Spence on September 12, 1953 at St. Nicholas Orthodox Church. He was a member of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church, the Serbian Lodge of St. John the Baptist, the National Home Builders Association and a life member of the National Rifle Association. Walt was commissioned as a Michigan Volunteer Conservation Officer. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. He enjoyed sports and had a special affinity for baseball. Walt retired from Michigan Bell after 41 years of service. He was a builder for many years and built several homes for his family.
Surviving are wife, Allison;
Children, Michael and wife Jennifer, and their children Ressa and Walter of Traverse City,
John and wife Nancy, and their children Chelsea and Luke of Port Huron,
Bruce and wife Vickie, and daughter Arielle of Mt Pleasant,
Marla and husband Dave Houser, and sons Kraig and Mark of Davison;
Kristin and husband Jim Hart of Clarkston;
Sister Mary and family of Florida;
And many extended family and friends.
