SHAW, Richard A. (Dick) died March 06, 2013 at the age of 81 at Genesys Hospice in Goodrich, MI. Family visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm on Saturday, March 23, 2013 with a Memorial Service immediately following at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Dr. Tom Saunders officiating. Cremation has taken place.
Dick was born June 5th, 1931 to Leo and Bessie (Meeker) Shaw in Flint, Michigan. He moved with his family to Vernon, Michigan moving back to Flint and graduating from Flint Central High School. He continued his education at Flint Junior College and joined the Coast Guard. At the end of his service (1954) he married Genevieve Rosellen McDonnell daughter of Dennis and Sylvia (Gifford) McDonnell.
Dick and Gen raised four children in Clio, and later built their retirement home in Grand Blanc where he has resided for the past almost 20 years.
Dick owned and operated several businesses in Flint. Shaw’s Gambles Hardware Store, New Touch Auto Detailing, and Acme Paint and Distributing which was renamed R.A. Shaw Co. He owned and operated the building materials company until his retirement in the mid 1990’s.
Dick was a founding member and served as President of the Northwest Flint Optimist Club. He later joined the Downtown Flint Optimist Club. He served on the local board for the American Lung Association. He was also on the Board of Directors for the National Paint Distributers. He supported the Flint Cultural Center with his donations to the Sloan Museum still on display there today.
He renovated and saved one of Billy Durant’s original carriage factory buildings in Flint operating his business from the facility for a period of time.
Dick enjoyed hunting, traveling, family gatherings, card games, and joking around. His one long term passion was owning, restoring, driving, and showing his antique cars. Dick and Gen toured those cars all over the United States and enjoyed many good friends they met. He belonged to several antique car clubs both local and national.
Most of all Dick was a very devoted husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather and will be missed.
Surviving: son Dennis of Grand Blanc and his daughters Kelly (Dan) O’Connor and Leslie Shaw, Daughter Debra Shaw and Julie Lynn of Baltimore Maryland, Son Devin (Debbie) Shaw of Mt. Morris and his children Courtney (Justin) Gawne, Nate, Hailan, Lainey, and Bonnie Shaw, Daughter Diane Shaw (Bernie Giles) and her daughters Ashley (Chris) Ecton and Betsey Hassenger. Four great- granddaughters Olivia, Emily, Amelia and Danielle. He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters, brother, and his wife Gen.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to either Genesys Hospice or the University of Michigan Alzheimer’s Disease Center.
