Valentine "Val" Frank Young passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Sterling House of Midland. He was born in Flint MI on March 20,1932 to Fawny and Violet (May) Young.

Valentine received his early education at Flint Utley Elementary School and later he attended the Forest Country School near Lennon, MI. He skipped 8th grade going directly to Owosso High School from the 7th grade and graduated in 1949.

Valentine was married to Barbara Elaine Stuart on August 1, 1952 and together they raised three children, Gwen, Val II and Toni.

Val entered the US Air Force for a four-year enlistment in 1950. He was stationed in Washington DC, Denver CO, Kimpo Air Force Base near Seoul, Korea in 1952-1953 during the Korean Conflict and Ellsworth AFB at Rapid City SD until his Honorable Discharge.

With assistance from the GI bill, Val earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Central Michigan University. He taught History & Government and coached in the Whittemore-Prescott High School from 1963 to 1966. He taught General Science and Physical Education in the Sanford Meridian School System from 1966 to 1981 and continued coaching until 1994. He coached Meridian football teams to US 10 League Championship in 1969 and Jack-Pine League Championship in 1973. Val coached Meridian basketball teams to Jack-Pine League Championships in 1978, 1979, 1980 and 1981, State District Championships in 1979, 1980 and 1982, and a Regional Championship in 1980. His Meridian High Boys Track Team won championships in 1977 and 1978.

The Associated Press recognized Val as Class B Coach of the Year in Basketball in 1981. He was an honest man who led an exemplary life of good sportsmanship which he taught to his children, students and athletes. He spent many hours preparing game plans, holding practices and hosting his athletes at his home for viewing films and planning game strategies.

Val enjoyed all sports and was an avid golfer. He established the Meridian Golf League in 1970 and continued to play in that League which included his son and many men whom he had taught to play golf when they were in Junior High.

He enjoyed his annual spring golf trips to Kentucky with his brothers, his son and golf league friends and enjoyed playing at Sandy Ridge with Lee’s Friday Group. When weather allowed, he played golf from morning until dark. He had 2 “hole-in-ones” and a Double Eagle which gave him much pleasure.

Val loved his children and their spouses and was very proud of their accomplishments in their personal lives and their chosen career fields. He loved his grandchildren who knew him as the “Golfing Grampa.”

Val is survived by his wife of 61 years, his children: Gwendolyn (Robert) Alim-Young of Grand Ledge, Valentine II (Patty) Young of Sanford, Toni Young and Mary Olson of Lansing, his grandchildren: Adrienne (Christian) Hatzenbeler, Robert (Marcy) Young, David (Sarah)Alim, Aja Alim-Young & fiancée, Jay Jenks and great-grandchildren, Kylah, Lucas, Presley, Kason, Kellen. Also surviving is his brother, William S. (Patricia) Davis, sisters-in-law, Suzanne Davis, Gloria Stuart, several nieces and nephews and his faithful golf partner, Tom TJ Clark (Mona) who provided support and encouragement to him in his battle with cancer.

Val was predeceased by his father, mother, step-father, Francis Davis, his sister, Mary Louise Young, his brothers, Wayne Young and Frank Davis, nephew, Scott Davis and brother-in-law, Gordon Stuart.

A memorial service will be held at Smith-Miner Funeral Home on Monday, May 5, 2014 at 11 am with Rev. Mike Taulbee of MidMichigan Home Care officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Sunday, May 4, 2014 from 4-7 pm and on Monday at 10 am until the time of service.

Memorials may be offered to the Meridian Athletic Scholarship Fund or MidMichigan Homecare Services-Hospice division.
