THORNTON, Shirley - of Flint, MI, age 81, passed away Monday, January 13, 2020 at McLaren Flint. A Funeral Service will be held 1 PM Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison, MI 48423; Rev. Fr. William Wegher officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive visitors 5-8 PM Thursday, 10 AM-8 PM Friday and 1 hour prior to the service on Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to American Cancer Society, American Heart Association or the Alzheimer’s Foundation.
Shirley was born in Flint, MI on November 5, 1938, the daughter of the late Barney and Mary Ellen (Rosebush) Ellingson. She graduated from Flint Central High School in 1957. Shirley retired from the Flint Board of Education. She was proudly a 40-year season ticket holder of all the Flint hockey teams. Shirley was a member of Burton Eagles Aerie #3814 and Flint Eagles #629.
Shirley is survived by 7 children, Olen Christopher (Rhonda) Thornton, Deborah Clark, Diane Thornton, Christine (Chip) Evans, Colleen (Tony) Parker, Brian Thornton and Jonathan (Karen) Thornton; sisters, Jean Boyle and Anita Ellingson; grandchildren, Tacara (Allen) Sherrington, Ryan Evans, Evan Murphy, Thomas McGrath, Jr., Megan Evans, Austen Murphy, Taylor Thornton and Morgan Murphy; many great-grandchildren, step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Barney and Mary Ellen Ellingson; brother, Barney Ellingson, Jr.; son-in-law, Thomas McGrath, Sr.
