Victor Roland McElhose, age 96, of Grand Blanc, Michigan passed away on Saturday, June 29, 2024. Victor was born on May 29, 1928 in Detroit, Michigan. In October of 1946, Victor joined the US Occupation Army during WWII. He was stationed in Japan until 1948. After the service, he obtained a summer job painting houses and then in the fall worked for Buick for 9 months. The next summer he traveled in his old Model A with his cousin Paul to Maine, where he worked on a farm baling hay. In the fall he headed out West to California to dynamite a gold mine in the Mojave desert till Christmas. In the following year, Victor attended an electronics school in Chicago. In July, he moved to Flint to work at Ohio Plate Glass Company until 1951. In the spring of 1951, he was a park ranger at Holland State Park until the summer of 1952 where he began his own painting business. The following year, Victor took the opportunity to join GM as a shop painter until his retirement in 1987.
Victor was an accomplished painter and artist with a poetic spirit. He loved music and enjoyed playing the guitar and harmonica. Victor was a longtime member of Holy Family Catholic Church; he joined the parish in 1966. A favorite story Victor would love to tell, was when he met the love of his life Eleanor. Victor attended a Valentine's day dance at St. Michaels with his friend Cletus. It was at the dance he first saw Eleanor. He leaned over to his friend and said, "I'm gonna marry her one day". And he did in October of that year. They were married 70 years.
Victor was a wonderful man and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; children: Christine (Bill) Blue, Cynthia Calkins, Celeste (Robert) Farver, Mark McElhose, Patricia (Lorenz) Sollmann, Michelle Welton; grandchildren: Jason Hobbins, Christa Calkins, Christopher Calkins, Curtis Calkins, Sarah (Tanner) Farver-Nelson, April (Joey) Maurer, Tim Farver, Lea (Liam) McCarthy, Josef Sollmann, Jehannah (Andrew) Quinan; several great grandchildren; and sisters, Shirley O'Keefe and Marilyn Pohlmann.
A visitation for Victor will be held Monday, July 8, 2024 from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Michigan. A funeral mass will occur Tuesday, July 9, 2024 at 10:00 AM with one hour of visitation prior to at Holy Family Catholic Church, 11804 S Saginaw St, Grand Blanc, Michigan. Interment will follow at Crestwood Cemetery in Grand Blanc, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital at www.stjude.org
