Harley was born September 13, 1924 in Drayton North Dakota to Edmund and Aurelia Fortier on their family farm. He joined the Air Force Aviation Cadet Program in high school and became a pilot at age 19. While attending Tri-State College in Angola, Indiana, he worked as a flight instructor and flew P-51s for the Indiana National Guard. On September 22, 1949, he married Marilyn Jane Story. He graduated from Tri-State College in 1950, with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. Shortly after, he was sent by the National Guard to fly 100 missions as a fighter pilot flying P-51 Mustangs in the Korean War and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. After discharge, he worked at AC Spark Plug as a Sales Engineer for 32 years, retiring in 1984, to their homes in Boyne City and Fort Myers Beach. Harley was a founding father of Chapter 77 of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) of Flushing, Michigan and is still a member. Besides flying, he loved working in his garage "making sawdust", building dune buggies, camping, boating, traveling and especially all the great times with his family and friends.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 65 years, Marilyn; three children, Lynette (Scott) Horvath, Pamela Plouffe, Timothy (Julie) Edmund; eight grandchildren, Ryan (Maureen) Horvath, Amanda (Joe) Johnson, Nick (Kristin) Horvath, Katie (John) Hamilton, James (Kimberly) Plouffe, Emily Simunic, who preceeded him in death on June 25, 2009, Stephanie Guerre, Drew Edmund Fortier; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Darlyne Plutowski and many nieces and nephews.
We wish to thank our caregivers Rita, Ann, Heather and Gentiva Hospice for their loving care. |
