BORTLE, Donald Lee. – of Clio, age 91, died on Tuesday, November 5, 2019 at Gross Assisted Living of Clio. The family will receive visitors at the O’Guinn Family Funeral Home in Clio on Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 2PM until 8PM. No formal services will be held. Private burial will be in West Vienna Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Gross Assisted Living.
Don was born May 24, 1928 in Genesee, Michigan to the late Horace and Amy (Hewitt) Bortle. He attended Clio High School. Don married Dolores Shonts on May 22, 1948 and they enjoyed 70 years together. She preceded him in death March 15, 2019. Mr. Bortle retired from Buick with over 40 years of service. He was a member of the Coachman’s Travel Club for many years. Don was an avid fisherman and hunter, he especially enjoyed hunting with his son, David. He was a very talented wood carver – making deer and all different types of birds. Don also carved furniture and found great joy just giving it all away. He was quite the handyman and was always available to help his family with household projects. He loved all his Dachshunds over the years, his most recent being Heidi who always found a spot on his lap. Above all, Don loved spending time with his family and was known for making the very best peanut brittle.
Surviving are: Children: Ricky Bortle, David (Diane) Bortle, Brenda (Jim) Andrews, and Lynette (Ron) Magnus; Grandchildren: Kami Bodnar, Tara Altenritter, Katina Bortle-Jackson, Bryce (Courtney) Bortle, Nicholas (Michelle) Magnus, Andrew (Jennifer) Magnus, and Allison Magnus; Step grandchildren: Daniel Thorpe and Dana (Chad) Humphreys; 21 great grandchildren; Twin sister, Donna Hull; Sister, Evelyn Rowland. Don was also preceded in death by: Granddaughter, Lindsay Bortle-Rogers; Brother, Elwyn Bortle.
