MARTIN, Jacqueline Mae (Bowen), of Davison, MI and Clearwater, Florida, was born on December 28, 1931 in Chicago to the late Rev. John (Jack) and Claudia Bowen. At two years old, she was featured in a 1933 Chicago calendar. She attended Flint Central High School, and was active in music, journalism, and drama clubs. She went on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Calvin College, and attended the University of Michigan to work toward her Master’s Degree. While attending college, she was a member of Choir. She was an accomplished Soprano soloist, performing at important events in people’s lives.
Jacqueline was a devoted elementary educator teaching music, drama, Kindergarten and early elementary grades. She loved to guide children and help them learn, especially read, a lifelong passion of hers. She taught in the Flint public school system for 29 years. During her tenure, she taught at Merrill, Homedale, Pierson, Potter, and Sobey Elementary Schools helping school children become good learners and successful citizens. In addition she taught private piano lessons.
A highly creative person, she expressed herself through teaching, music, drama and art. In her later years, she created large watercolor paintings, designed her home floor plans and traveled in Europe.
Jacqueline was an active 58-year member of Emmanuel Baptist Church, where her father pastored the congregation for 27 years. She lead children’s Sunday School and Vacation Bible School; sang solos, in small groups, in the choir, chorale cantatas; and lead special events and committees for many years. In addition, she started the Library at Emmanuel. She has many loving life-long friends from Emanuel. In addition, she attended Bible Study Fellowship for 5 years and led a small group. For the past 9 years, she has been a member of Faith Baptist Church (Davison). Her life’s devotion to God has been unwavering.
Jacqueline always had a zest for life and love for people, especially children. She was known for her love of a good joke, and her empathy and kindness towards others. She will be missed by people of all generations whom she loved. Always optimistic, she was thankful for the many blessings God had given her and her family even in difficult times.
In her later years, she was challenged with Lewy Bodies, Parkinson’s disease and Heart problems; however, she never let those illnesses or limitations define her. She continued to focus on who she was apart from illness and enjoy life. Her family wishes to express their deep appreciation to the compassionate McLaren Hospice team who helped care for Jacqueline in her own home making it possible for her to continue enjoying life.
Above all, she was the loving wife of 56-years to Odell (Dale) and mother to Debra, Barbara (Bob) Martinez and Janet (Joe Vito) of Nashville, TN, all of whom survive her. Her sister, Elizabeth (John) Wolfe of Royal Oak and her brother William R. of Clearwater, FL also survive.
Friends and family are invited to visit 12:00 – 2:00 PM, and 5:00 – 7:00 PM Monday and 12:00 – 1:00 Tuesday. Jacqueline’s funeral is will be held at Allen Funeral Home, 1:00 PM, Tuesday officiated by Rev. Larry Nagengast, Faith Baptist Church (Davison) Burial will be in Davison Cemetery.
