Gerard Gregory Steven Voland

Born: 9/4/1949
Died: 2/2/2016
Age: 66
Community: Grand Blanc, MI

VOLAND, Gerard – age 66, passed gently into Life on Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016, beloved husband of Margaret (Fredal) Voland, papa of Nicholas, Alex and Paul Voland, son of Norman (deceased) and Eleanor Voland, and brother of Norma Bell-Voland. Gerard was a dedicated university faculty for approximately 40 years, in professorial rank and university administration (B.S./M.S. in Physics - University of California, Los Angeles, and Ph.D. in Engineering Design - Tufts University, Boston). As a successful administrator, he was visionary and creative, but most importantly a peace-maker. He liberally accommodated requests, but stood firm against infractions of a legal or ethical nature. Gerard most enjoyed his years of teaching. He often remarked, “The A-B students do not need me, their teacher; they’ll make it on their own. I’m here for the C-D students who are struggling, and might not make it without assistance; I want to help them grow and give them a chance to contribute professionally.” He was well loved by his students, receiving multiple student-voted Professor of the Year awards. Gerard was the affectionate father of his adopted (Russian-born) sons Nicholas, Alex and Paul, squatting down at the airline gate to hug all three boys simultaneously when they de-boarded the plane with Margaret. The boys were 9, 10 and 11 years old at the time. He told his wife, “When I saw them coming with you, it was like receiving my babies in the maternity ward of a hospital.” He was thrilled. Gerard was a humble man of faith. In his last seven months, when his health failed rapidly, he remarked to his family and friends, “I have had a life incredibly blessed by God, of which I was not deserving.” You have taught us many things, Gerard, and we love you! The wake will be at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 South Saginaw Street, Grand Blanc, Michigan 48439 on Monday, February 8th, 2016; visitation 3PM-8PM, with Rosary at 7PM. The Funeral Mass will be at Saint Matthew’s Roman Catholic Church, 706 Beach Street, Flint, Michigan 48502 on Tuesday, February 9th, 2016 at 10AM, with a reception following Mass. On the day of interment, Thursday, February 11th, 2016, all are invited to attend daily Mass, 7:30AM, at Assumption Grotto Church, 13770 Gratiot Avenue, Detroit, Michigan 48205. There will be a complimentary breakfast will following the Mass and interment will take place at 12PM at Assumption Grotto Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, your prayers for the repose of Gerard’s soul and for his family would be greatly appreciated. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.hillfh.com.
