HUGHES, Robert E. – of Lapeer, more recently of Burton, age 89, passed away peacefully at home in his lawn chair with his book on April 30, 2016. Cremation has taken place and no services will be held.
Robert was born on August 24, 1926 in Flint, MI to Edwin and Stella (Aldrich) Hughes. Bob proudly served his country during World War II, joining the Navy at 16 and serving in the Naval Air Force as a radioman and gunner in the Pacific Theatre and received many medals and commendations for his service. Bob worked for Michigan Bell in both the Lapeer office, working in the field and the Flint office in the Toll Test Department. Bob retired in 1985 with 40+ years of service. Bob also had his own business in the Lapeer area in the 1950’s and early 60’s repairing televisions and radios. He was a jack of all trades, remodeling and building his own homes. He was an electrician, plumber, carpenter and mechanic. The Flint Public Library was a favorite place for Bob. He was a prolific reader and interested in everything. His common sense, intelligence and great sense of humor will be missed sorely by his family, friends and neighbors.
Bob is survived by his sons, Tom and Ed Hughes of Stanton, MI; daughters, Susan (Dan) Broecker of Lapeer and Kathleen (Terry) Tack of Williamsburg, MI; grandchildren, Mike, Eric, Amanda, Emily, Marin, Brian, Tricia, Melissa and Lori; 12 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Virginia and June; wife, Doris; stepsons, Richard Swinson and John Parks.
