Converso, W. Paul – of Grand Blanc, age 92 died peacefully on May 14 at his daughter’s home in Ann Arbor with family by his side (and in the care of Hospice of Michigan). He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother. He greeted everyone he met with a smile (and sometimes a song or a story); you couldn’t help but smile when you were near him. Paul was born January 27, 1921 in Baltimore, MD to a musical family. His father, Michelangelo was a popular bandmaster and a leading symphony trumpeter; his mother, Frances (Bond) Converso was an organist and a piano teacher. Paul had two younger brothers, with whom he was very close. Pompeo who was a singer and insurance evaluator and Michael who is a clarinet player, music instructor, school teacher and band leader in Baltimore. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Michigan, served in the Army during WWII and completed his education earning a Master’s degree at Syracuse University. After marrying the love of his life and best friend Susan (Mills) in Massachusetts they moved to Tennessee where he was the head of the voice department and director of choirs at Carson-Newman College. Paul and Susan moved to Flint in 1951 where he taught voice at Baker Conservatory, directed the Flint Community Chorus (then-called Flint Choral Union). He directed the North Baptist Church Choir for three years, Court Street Methodist Church Choir for 11 years and the Trinity United Methodist Church Choir for 17 years. He became an insurance agent working for American United Life for 22 years. He was also a Flint Kiwanis president and a three-year president of the Flint Music Teachers Association. In addition to the many charities he contributed to, he was generous with his time, including volunteering at the Crim Road Race for many years. Paul had an extraordinary relationship with his granddaughter, Katie, being a primary care-giver (as he was retired and while her mother worked) from the age of 3 months through elementary school; they were inseparable. Paul is survived by his loving wife Susan and their two children Brian (Tammy) of Burton and Kimber (Yvonne) of Ann Arbor as well as three grandchildren, Katie (Ely) of Long Beach, CA, Kristi and Jamie also of Burton and his brother Michael of Baltimore, MD. His brother Pompeo of Baltimore, MD preceded him in death.
