Vickie attended Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. In 1964, she married Robert E. Weiss and they began their life together in Genesee County. They both leave behind an incredible legacy of public service. Bob and Vickie were married for 45 years.
Vickie taught for over 55 years, nearly all of them in Grand Blanc, at Indian Hill, Brendel, Cook and City School, which she helped to establish. Through her commitment, passion and innovation, she changed countless lives and was an advocate for her students and public education. She was an early adopter of experiential learning and will be remembered by her hundreds of students for the many field trips and life experiences she provided each year.
Vickie served on many boards including the Board of Directors for the National Council for Social Studies (NCSS); was a committee member for the NCSS Social Studies Notable Trade Books Review Committee; and on the Carter G. Woodson Book Award Committee. She was on the Executive Committee for the Weiss Advocacy Center and was involved for many years with Camp Copneconic. However, her favorite activity was working with her students as an Odyssey of the Mind coach for 25 years, taking her teams to World Finals five times.
Distinguished and accomplished in her career, Vickie received many awards and accolades throughout the years. Retirement was not in Vickie’s vocabulary and she was looking forward to being a Curriculum Coordinator at the Flint Cultural Center Academy this fall. She loved her family, her students, traveling and books.
A loving mother and proud grandmother she is survived by her children, Sanford (Jamie) Ring, Jan (Alex) Crawford and Pam (Jason) Serwa, and seven grandchildren, Molly and Casey Ring, Ethan and Sloane Crawford, and Jake, Charlie and Ryan Serwa. Sister-in-law, Nancy Siegel and nephew and nieces, Mark Siegel, Ellyn (Jack) Backstrom and Amy Gottlieb. She is predeceased by her beloved husband, Robert E. Weiss.
The family is especially grateful to the staff on the oncology floor at McLaren Oakland in Pontiac.
