CONLEY (SPUD) SPIVEY, age 94, of Burton, MI and Mesa, AZ.
Mr. Spivey passed away gently on December 23, 2013, in his Burton home, surrounded by his family and special friend of 17 years, Aggie White. Cremation has taken place. An informal memorial service will be held at Hill Funeral Home in Grand Blanc on Saturday, January 25, with visitation at 11 a.m. and remembrances at noon. He was born in Lakeview, Ohio, on March 14, 1919, the first of five children of Mary and Grover Spivey. His family moved to Flint when he was a young boy. He married Christine O’Lear in 1941 in Flint.
During World War II, he was part of the Army crew that worked on the Alaskan Highway. He was a designated rifle sharpshooter and also was on the hunting team that provided game for the Alaskan crew. He served in the Army combat engineers for over five years, attended air cadet training at Knox College in Illinois, and later served as 1st Sergeant in the Military Police at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, where he oversaw 150 staff members.
After discharge from the Army, he joined the Flint Fire Department. Although nominated several times to be Fire Chief, he preferred to drive the fire engines and the Emergency vehicle and later was the Fire Chief’s assistant and driver to fires, accidents, and medical emergencies, where he helped administer first aid. He knew every street in Flint and had an excellent memory until the final week before he died. He was a table tennis and chess champ, competing within all the Flint fire stations. He also served as the arbitrator between the firefighters union and the City of Flint.
Upon retirement in 1971, he was recognized as Fireman of the Year for his dedicated service.
A hunting and fishing enthusiast, he was a member of the Hubbard Lake Club for 52 years. He was known for being the first one up in the mornings. He was an active member of his club until this year, retiring this December.
For several summers, he and wife Christine and their two daughters drove and camped in every major section of the mainland United States. He and Christine were fortunate to travel with friends to Scandinavia, Russia, and Mexico, Australia, New Zealand and Hawaii; and he later traveled, in his 80’s, with special friend Aggie White to Alaska, China, and Hawaii.
In his lifespan, he saw many changes to our country and the world. He kept up with the times; besides his computer, he also used an iPad, DVR, and a cellphone. His family is greatly appreciative that he served as his family, relatives’, and friends’ historian with many home movies, videos and slides, which he had transferred to DVDs. He also stored over 1500 of his favorite photos of friends and family on his computer.
He loved music, especially country, Dixieland, and guitar instrumentals, and enjoyed recording multi-track music CDs for his friends and relatives, keeping busy in his office until shortly before he died. He expressed appreciation for the visits of friends and family in his later years; he enjoyed their company.
He is survived by two daughters, Christina (Al) Putney of Davison Twp., and Lynda (Bill) Beierwaltes of Loveland, CO; grandchildren Ben (Erin) Beierwaltes of Longmont, CO; Nicole Putney (Colorado Springs, CO) and Evan Putney (Flint); and special friend and caregiver Aggie White and family.
Mr. Spivey was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Christine, in 1997; granddaughter Tia Beierwaltes at age 15 in 1998; and his brothers, Darrell and Charles, and sisters, Laura and Estee, and more recently brother-in-law and close friend, Fred Kerns.
The family wish to thank his skillful hospice staff for their compassionate care of our father and grandfather.
