Karen Ann Carsten, 80, of Durand, began her incredible journey to Heaven on Thursday, October 4, 2018. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at 10:30am at St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand. Rev. Fr. Jonathan Perrotta will celebrate. The family will receive friends at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, Durand Chapel, on Friday, October 12, 2018 from 5-8pm, and Saturday from 9-10:30am at the church, the rosary will be prayed at 7pm Friday at the funeral home.
Karen was born on August 29, 1938 in Durand, Michigan to the late George H. and Katherine (Smith) Gillis. She graduated from Durand High School class of 1956, and on October 10, 1959 she married H. Vincent Carsten at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Gaines, Michigan. Karen was a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Durand, and assisted with the Altar Society funeral dinners for many years. She was a life member of the Durand Union Station, and served them in many volunteer capacities.
Karen is survived by her children; Julie (Wally) Walter of Mio, Linda (Mike) Rexin of Lennon, Jeffrey Carsten of Lennon, and Susan Carsten of Durand, her 10 grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, her sister, Patricia Roper of Durand, and many nieces and nephews.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, H. Vincent Carsten, her sons; Craig, and David Carsten, her daughter, Diane Carsten, grandson, Andrew Merrill and her son in-law, Dennis Carrier.
Contributions in Mrs. Carsten's name are suggested to the St. Mary Altar Society, Durand Union Station, or Memorial Hospice.
