FENNER, Laurel Jean - Age 80, of Davison, died October 2, 2018. Funeral services will be held 11AM Wednesday October 10 at Lamb Of God Lutheran Church 2051 W. Maple Rd. Flint. Pastor Mark Pretznow officiating. Burial to follow at Great Lakes National Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-8PM Tuesday October 9 at Sharp Funeral Home & Cremation Center 6063 Fenton Rd. Flint and also from 10AM Wednesday until time of service at the church. Those desiring may make contributions to Flint Banjo Club, Lamb Of God Lutheran Church, or Trinity Lutheran Church. Laurel was born October 18, 1937 in Flint, the daughter of Glenn Delbert and Priscilla May (Miller) Shaft. She married Leon Fenner on August 10, 1991 in Flint. Laurel proudly served her country in the U S Air Force during the Korea War.She belonged to the Flint Board of Realtors, American Society of Radiologic Technologists, Peace Lutheran Church, The Flint Banjo Club, and The Happy Wanderers Banjo Group. Laurel worked at Michigan Bell from 1955, after graduation from Flint Central High School until 1961. She served in the USAF for 3 years, from 1956 to 1959 as a basic training instructor, supply sergeant and family services. Stationed at Lackland AFB, also in East Saint Louis and Michigan. Laurel became a Registered Radiologic Technologist in 1961 and also became a medical transcriptionist resulting in starting a business of her own in 1970 called Medi-Call. She also worked for Medical Records Corporation in 1973. Laurel was an X-Ray Tech at Hurley and McLaren and Dr. Turckes, she was in the field for 12 years. Laurel received her associates degree from Mott Community College, her under graduate degree from the University of Michigan Flint and her masters degree from Central Michigan. She worked at Chevrolet Metal Fabricating on a co-op program as a Production Supervisor and later as a labor relations rep, education and training department, general stores, and a variety of jobs. Laurel received her real estate license in 1978 and worked in that field for 2 years. She left Michigan and traveled to Oklahoma to take a job in a GTE phone mart as the manager of two phone marts, directly supervising 10 employees, handling customer complaints. Laurel had open heart surgery in 1982, and retired on disability at that time. She also had two subsequent open heart surgeries and during the convalescence took up the banjo. Laurel became a member of the Flint Banjo Club in 1985 and continued to play not only in that group but in a small group called the Happy Wanderers. She also taught many students to play. Laurel is survived by her husband, Leon; stepson, Joseph (Kim) Fenner; 4 step-grandchildren; sister, Glenda (Paul) Dailey; two brother-in-laws, Larry (Ada) Fenner, Leonard (Barbara) Fenner; several nieces and nephews.
