Frederick Myles Murphy, age 73, was surrounded by his loving family when he peacefully passed away in his Chesaning home on Monday, December 30, 2019. Fred was born September 28, 1946 to Noreen Cecilia (Brakel) Murphy and Myles Patrick Murphy in Traverse City, Michigan where he was raised with his beloved siblings; Terry (Judy) Murphy, Dianne Murphy-Kilbourne, Maureen (Roger) Ruiz, and Patricia Murphy (deceased). Fred attended St. Francis High School in Traverse City where he greatly enjoyed playing varsity football all four years and being a member of the Young Democrats organization. He was a proud member of the graduating class of 1965.
Fred was only 14 years old when he first chased his future wife, Kathleen Mary (Bauer) Murphy, up an apple tree. Fred and Kathy were married a few short years later in 1966. Together, they raised three incredible children, Kim (Ben) Romes of Swartz Creek, Frederick Jr. (Holly) Murphy of Montrose, and Tony (Amy) Murphy of Gaines Township. Fred and Kathy were also the very proud and loving grandparents to eight amazing grandchildren; Frederick Murphy III; Jeremey and Amanda Hillier; Ben and Brittany Romes; and Charlie, Evie and Audrey Murphy.
In 1965 Fred was hired by General Motors and he and Kathy moved to Flint. Initially, he worked in the foundry, and later transitioned into working as a skilled trades pipefitter in Buick City Plant 36 until his retirement in 1995. Fred and Kathy lived in New Lothrop, and then later, Chesaning, making many new friends along the way. Fred was a friend to all and enjoyed many close friendships throughout his years, especially with George Stachnik.
Throughout his lifetime Fred had many interests and tackled many business endeavors. He operated a coffee cart in the shop, started a small lawn care business with his son, and sold Christmas trees he and his family maintained and harvested from his Mesick farm. Fred enjoyed creating woodworking projects and loved to tend to his yard. He graciously volunteered his time and efforts to the Lions Club of New Lothrop, the Boy Scouts, and to the Shiawassee County 4-H organization.
Fred left behind countless family members and friends who will undoubtedly miss him and take comfort in the warm memories they shared. His loving demeanor and unmatched humor made Fred the kind of guy everyone loved. Fred’s perpetual smile was carved by the many memories he created with those that surrounded him throughout his lifetime.
His family will receive visitors at Misiuk Funeral Home, 202 South Front Street, Chesaning on Sunday, January 5, 2020, from 2-8pm and Monday January 6 from 10-11am. A Memorial Service will be officiated by his daughter-in-law, Amy Murphy, on Monday, January 6 at 11am with a light lunch to follow. Any monetary contributions can be made to Hospice and the family requests that you come prepared to share your stories about Fred.
