ZALIZNY, Mathew – age 92, of Davison, MI, passed away Friday, October 12, 2018. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 PM Thursday, October 18, 2018 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 404 North Dayton Street, Davison, MI 48423; Rev. Fr. Andrew A. Czajkowski celebrant. A Private Entombment will be held at New Calvary Catholic Cemetery. Military Honors will be held under the auspices of the U.S. Army and the Marine Corps League Flint Detachment #155 immediately following the Mass at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. The family will receive visitors 2-4 PM and 5-8 PM Wednesday, October 17, 2018 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison, MI 48423 and 11 AM-12 PM Thursday, October 18, 2018 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. A Memorial Service under the auspices of the Davison Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree Council #4090 and 4th Degree Assembly #0523 will be held 6 PM Wednesday, October 17, 2018, immediately followed by a Rosary, at Allen Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, in Mathew’s memory.
Mathew was born in Flint, MI on May 5, 1926, son of the late Michael and Helen (Piotrowski) Zalizny. He was a graduate of Flint Northern High School Class of 1944. Mathew proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1944-1946. He served as a Sergeant in the 11th Airborne Division 472nd Field Artillery Para Glider Battalion in the Pacific Theater. Mathew married the love of his life, Kathleen Dorrian, on July 12, 1952 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Burton, MI. Mathew and Kathleen were married 65 beautiful years before she passed away on June 5, 2017. He retired from General Motors Flint Truck Assembly in 1986 after 37 years of service. Mathew was a member of UAW Local #598 and the Fenton VFW Post #3243. He was also a member of the Davison Knights of Columbus, 3rd Degree Council #4090 and 4th Degree Assembly #0523. Mathew enjoyed traveling with his wife, spending time Up North and their time in Florida, but nothing was more important to him than spending time with his family.
Mathew is survived by 4 children, Patrick (Cindy) Zalizny, Thomas (Barbara) Zalizny, Nora (Brian) Steibel and Janet Opila; 5 grandchildren, Rachel (Nick), Matthew (Jenna), Kyle (Ashley), Jessica and Joshua (fiancée, Paula); 4 great-grandchildren and many other loving family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kathleen; son-in-law, Thomas Opila; brother, Thomas Zalizny; 2 sisters, Helen Delores (Robert) Hutchins and Geneive Zalizny.
