Beloved Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother age 90 passed away at her daughter and sons home in Owosso on Monday, December 17, 2012.

Funeral services will be held 11am Friday, December 21, 2012 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Corunna with The Rev. Russell Merrill officiating. Burial will follow at Yerian Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Nelson-House Funeral Home on Wednesday from 6 to 8pm and Thursday from 9am to 8pm.

Emma was born April 28, 1922 in Owosso, Michigan and was the middle child of Czechoslovakian immigrants Frank and Anna (Hruska) Charvat. She grew up in the Owosso area attending Owosso Public Schools then moved to Corunna in 1952. She married Russell Franklin Merrill, October 10, 1953 at the First Baptist Church of Owosso. He predeceased her on October 17, 1983.

She was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Corunna, MI and was a member of the choir in earlier years.

Emma loved to dance, cook, bake, play euchre and bowl. She loved to hear and tell jokes. Any day of the week you could see her walking a 2 mile route through Corunna and out to K-mart with her friends, she walked through her 80’s. She would listen to polka music on the radio especially WOES 91.3 the Polka Palace in Elsie all day long.

She worked for Gambles and Redmond’s in Owosso.

Lifelong resident of Shiawassee County, homemaker; Memorial Healthcare Volunteer since 1972 with 9,500 hours; member and cook at W.F.L.A.-Z.C.B.J. Lodge #229, Owosso; avid bowler-600 club; past president of the Owosso Eagles Auxiliary Area #851.

Every winter from 2000-2010 she would go to Camp Florida Resort where she met many dear friends. She knew everyone and everyone knew her. She played euchre, shuffleboard and did water aerobics. She will be missed by everyone in Lake Placid, Florida.

Emma is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren who were the love of her life; children Sharon and Willard “Buzz” Howes of Owosso, Paul Stanhope of Greenville and Russell Merrill of Lennon; grandchildren Douglas and Jacqueline Howes of Perry, Troy and Lynn Howes of Corunna, Blaise Stanhope of Japan serving in the U.S. Air Force and Bryce Stanhope of New Jersey, Eric and Amy Merrill of Foster City and Martin Merrill of Texas; great-grandchildren Jordan Ashley Howes, Nicholas Franklin Howes, Sierra Catherine Howes, Javen Ellwood Howes, Tyler Merrill, Abby and Emily Merrill; sisters Ann Deldin and Frances (Frank) Svarc of Owosso; sister-in-law Patricia Charvat of Oakley; many nieces, nephews and other loving family members.

She is predeceased by grandchildren Matthew James and Martin John Howes and Michael Anthony Stanhope; sister Rose Medich; brothers Paul Charvat, John Veytruba, Roy Charvat and Raynard Veytruba; brothers-in-law Fritz Medich and Charles Deldin.

Memorials are suggested to WOES 91.3 the Polka Palace or St. Paul’s Episcopal Church.
