Bessie’s parents Frantisek and Marie (Vyskocil) Cicha emigrated from Czechoslovakia in 1906 to work the sugar beet fields in Michigan where she was born. She was born October 15, 1912 in St. Louis, Michigan.

In 1912, the family returned to Blatnice, Czechoslovakia where she spent her childhood. Since she was a US citizen, in 1927, at the age of 14, her parents sent her to America to find a better life. She traveled with her brother Frank, and the two joined their sister Mary who had moved to Chicago a year earlier.

In America, she met Peter Cupal who had also emigrated from Czechoslovakia as a young boy. They married on October 7, 1934 and began their life together on a small farm near Swartz Creek, Michigan where she lived for seventy-nine years until the age of 100.

Bessie never knew a stranger. Her authenticity drew people to her. Her enthusiasm for life was unmatched and contagious. Her homemade Czech bakery and roast duck and sauerkraut were excellent and she often gently critiqued her children’s efforts to learn her techniques. She loved to travel and visited the Czech Republic several times to see her family. Czech music was a huge part of her life and she sang with the Friendship Club Singers for more than fifty years. Bessie loved her farm and the changes that nature brought to it with every season. She was a woman of deep faith who touched the lives of everyone who met her and she will be greatly missed.

Survived by her sister Frantishka Tethal of the Czech Republic, son Jerry (Olive) Cupal of Laramie, WY ; daughter Rose (Richard) White, Lake Orion; 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews in the Czech Republic. She was preceded in death by her parents Frantisek and Marie (Vyskocil) Cicha; husband Peter P. Cupal; sons Peter F. Cupal, John Cupal, and Rik Cupal; 3 brothers and 3 sisters.

The family is deeply grateful to all of her friends for their love and support, especially the kind and loving staff at Woodhaven Senior Community.
