Jeanne Blumenfeld Aaronson
June 28, 1929 – December 17, 2018
Flint
Jeanne Blumenfeld Aaronson left this world after 89 years to be with her beloved family, both human and K-9.
A memorial service will be held Thursday December 27, 2018 at noon at Swartz Funeral Home, Leonard Meizlish officiating. A gathering of friends and family begins at 11:00 until the time of the service. Contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Genesee County.
Jeanne was born in Seattle to the late Margaret “Peg”, and Herman “Pop” Blumenfeld. She was the youngest of her siblings, Harold “Mush” Blumenfeld, and Carrie Blumenfeld, both of whom preceded her in death. They grew up in the depression, and moved around from town to town: Portland OR, Oklahoma City OK, Kansas City MO, Trenton NJ, and Williamsport PA. They finally landed in St. Louis MO to stay when she was in the 5th grade. Jeanne began playing the oboe in 9th grade, and spent the summers of 1945, 1946, and 1947 at Interlochen National Music Camp in Michigan. Those experiences transformed her life. That is when and where she realized that music, specifically the oboe, was her calling. She graduated from University City High in St. Louis MO.
Jeanne attended Oberlin College and Conservatory where she earned her Bachelors of Arts in Music, and met and married Myron “Ron” Aaronson in 1950. Once again, she hopped around the country: Beverly OH (where she taught public school music down the road in Lowell OH), Fort Dix near Pemberton NJ, Rego Park NY, Athens OH, and Coshocton OH (where she established a nursery school). They finally landed in Flint MI to stay in 1958. Along the way they added three children that they adored, Jeff in 1953, Lynne in 1956, and Matt in 1960, all of whom survive her. Over her lifetime that family tree grew to include 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, who were a source of great joy. She and Ron were divorced in 1983. She worked at Mott Parent Education, and Hurley Hospital as an office administrator in the 1980s and 1990s. She was a long-standing member of Temple Beth El.
Jeanne had a robust musical career both performing, and teaching privately for over 50 years. She was an early and long-standing member of the Flint Symphony Orchestra, and also played in the Saginaw Symphony, Delta Summer Chamber Orchestra, Musical Tent, and Star Theater. She was a privileged performing member of the St. Cecelia Society for 25 years. She played for many years in chamber groups including the Camerata, with fine musicians like Bill Catherwood, and Charles Postlewate at locations like Woodside Church, and the Flint Institute of Arts. She was a proud lifetime member of the Musician’s Union.
Her love of her K-9 pets was profound: Bing, Cocoa, Missy, O’Grady, and Casey. She spread that love by volunteering at the Humane Society of Genesee County for 16 years.
