WELLMAN, Donald George – of Alpena, formerly of Birch Run, died Thursday, May 2, 2024, at Hurley Medical Center. Honoring Donald’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and a graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions can be made to the Clio VFW Honor Guard Post # 1452.
Donald was born February 22, 1931, in Flint, Michigan to the late Stephen and Annie (Rex) Wellman. He grew up in the Beecher neighborhood in Flint and attended Beecher High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1947 to 1951 during the Korean Conflict. On November 8, 1952, he married Patricia Ewing at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Mt. Morris. Donald lived in Birch Run, until 1981 and then moved north to the Alpena area. He was the Owner and Operator of Long Rapids Market in Lachine, Michigan, and Wellman Excavating and R & W Builders in Birch Run. Donald enjoyed bowling, hunting, and playing cards.
Surviving are: Daughter, Crystal (Mark) Gilkes-Mitchell; Grandchildren, James Taylor, Michele (Frankie) Cash II, Kellie (Jason) Holt, Lindsay (Jeremy) Kish, Joshua Taylor, and Matthew Mitchell; 13 Great Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his Parents; Wife, Patricia Wellman; Daughter, Roxanne Taylor; Brother, Stephen “Dale” Wellman.
