Irene V. Stevens
Age 96, of St. Louis, formerly of Montrose, passed away Monday, October 1, 2012 at Masonic Pathways in Alma.
Irene was born October 7, 1915 in Taymouth, Michigan the daughter of Peter and Edith (Alexander) MacDonald. She graduated from Montrose High School in 1934 and married her high school sweetheart, Wilfred Stevens on November 4, 1937. Irene had a gift of music which she enjoyed sharing with others. She played the piano for the vocal groups at Montrose High School while in school and in the years to follow, the organ for the Montrose United Methodist Church for over 30 years and performed on the pipe organ at the Temple Theatre in Saginaw. Irene enjoyed performing for and teaching music to others and had many successful piano students.
During WWII, she worked at AC Spark Plug Company in Flint. After her marriage, she and her husband became the proprietors of a sandwich shop and the Quality Market in East Tawas before opening Scotch Village Antiques in Montrose, a business that prospered for over 25 years. Irene supported the Montrose Village community in many ways, including serving on various election boards. She attended the First United Methodist Church in St. Louis and the Montrose United Methodist Church.
Irene is survived by her daughter, Nancy (Gib) Stark of Alma, two grandchildren, Susy Stark (Paul) Fendler of St. Louis, MO and Steven (Amy) Stark of Clare and four great grandchildren, Sophia and William Fendler and Alexandra and Cole Stark.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband, Wilfred, her brother, Edward MacDonald and her sister, Gladys Littlefield.
Irene’s greatest hope in life was to bring joy and happiness to others. She succeeded.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, October 26, 2012 at 2pm at Masonic Pathways, Doig Chapel with dear friend Pastor Terri Bentley of the First United Methodist Church in St. Louis officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Flint Theatre Organ Club, 2231 Hermitage Dr., Davison, MI 48423, First United Methodist Church, 116 S. Franklin St., St. Louis, MI 48880 or the Alma College Music Department Scholarship Fund, 614 W. Superior, Alma, MI 48801.
