Robert Cornell
Loving husband and father of seven children, 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren, Robert Cornell of New Lothrop passed away on November 17, 2016 – six days after his 84th birthday.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Bob loved his family and put them before all other pursuits in his life. He was passionate about airplanes and flying, becoming a pilot and sharing this passion by taking family and friends into the sky often. Bob was a Korean War veteran, serving on a destroyer in the Pacific Fleet, learning his trade as an electrician by working on the ship’s engines. After the war, he worked construction as an electrician, joining the IBEW before hiring on at GM Assembly in Flint, MI, retiring from GM in 1985.
Another passion was his farm in New Lothrop. He loved the open space, patrolling the grounds on his tractors and jeeps, taking off in his airplane on the runway he built on the farm. Anyone driving past the house would see his airplane parked next to his tractors in the yard. Bob restored army and navy jeeps, often driving them in 4th of July and Memorial Day parades in New Lothrop for the VFW. Bob was a post commander for VFW Post #6549 in New Lothrop and was dedicated to the work of veterans in the community.
A dedicated father and grandfather, he taught his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren the benefit of both work and fun. He lived it, he taught it – his life was the embodiment of hard work, pursuit of knowledge and enjoyment of passionate recreation.
He is survived by Mary, his wife of 62 years – his love, his friend, his partner for life.
God believed his job here was finished and wanted him up in His corner.
