VERMETTE, Eugenia Stella "Jean" -- of Fenton, Michigan (formerly of Flushing), age 88, died February 29 at Vicinia Gardens Memory Care. Funeral services will be held March 12, at 12 PM at Sharp Funeral Homes, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton. Visitation will be held from 10 AM until the time of service with a luncheon to follow at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or the Humane Society of Genesee County per her wishes.
Jean was born on April 29, 1927 to Stanley and Praxedis (Pearl Nowak) Zientek, in Flint, Michigan. Upon graduation from Flint Northern High School in 1945 she took secretarial classes and became an executive secretary at Buick Motor Division. She continued in this position working for "the best boss" until her marriage to Joseph Paul Vermette on August 5, 1950. She was a dedicated homemaker and "stay home" mom to her three children, Paula, Dawn, and Joey.
Jean was a founding member of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Parish in Flint. She was a long standing member of the Altar Society and worked in the church office for several years. She would also substitute teach in St. Luke's Elementary School and was a Brownie Leader. She could often be found volunteering in her children's classrooms and driving endless carpools.
Jean was a bowler and avid bridge player for many years. She returned to the work force in the 1970s doing clerical work at McLaren Hospital. When grandchildren started arriving she was the first to volunteer to baby sit! She loved that they all called her "Grandma Honey." She was a phenomenal grandmother not only to her 3 grandsons but to her 6 special extended grandchildren, too. They still tell fond stories of her teaching them to bake pies, shopping trips to Frankenmuth and her wonderful Holiday meals.
Jean enjoyed the outdoors much like her husband Paul and partook in hunting and fishing trips with him. For over 35 years they enjoyed yearly fishing trips to their beloved Pine Portage Lodge on Kabinakagami Lake in Northern Ontario Canada and celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary there with their family.
Jean was a devoted and loving wife, mother, and grandmother. Her sunny outlook and love of family will always be remembered. She leaves her daughters Paula (Bill) Floyd of Florida, Dawn (Steve) Shapiro of Fenton; grandsons Jeff (Christina) Davis of Howell, Joe (Anne) Davis of Denver, CO, and Drew Shapiro of Fenton. She also leaves sisters, Elizabeth Allen, Wanda Miller, and Lorrie Blanchard, brother Robert Zientek; sister-in-law Cecelia Clark, special extended grandchildren, Tracey Carpenter, Jeff Floyd, Jackie Shapiro Rosen, Robyn Waxman, Marnie Cooke, and David Shapiro, 11 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Jean was preceded in death by her husband Paul in 2012, son Joey in 1958, parents Stanley Zientek, Pearl May and sister, Delphine Leyman.
The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Weiss, Vicinia Gardens Memory Care, and The Medical Team Hospice Care for all they have done to help Jean in her last years of life. |
