Georgia Mae Summers, age 106, passed peacefully through heaven’s gate on Monday, April 22, 2019. Her homegoing will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Monday, April 29, 2019 at Quinn Chapel AME Church, 2101 Lippincott Blvd., Flint, Michigan, with family hour at 10:00 AM and funeral service commencing at 11:00 AM Rev. Sharinese Jackson, officiating. Burial will be in River Rest Cemetery near two of her sisters. Friends and pallbearers will assemble at the church 10:00 AM Monday. Ms. Summers now lies in state in the Chapel of Lawrence E. Moon Funeral Home, 906 W. Flint Park Blvd., with visitation from 10:00 AM - 6:00 PM today with the family present from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM to receive friends.
Georgia was born in Anniston, Alabama, February 17, 1913. As a young adult she moved to Chicago, Illinois and became a member of St. James A.M.E. Church for over 60 years, where she was a Torch Bearer in the Missionary Society. When her sister’s Marquita, health began to fail; she moved to Flint in 2007 and affiliated with Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church.
Always active, Georgia was an avid bridge player, a talented seamstress and loved to travel! Besides touring all over the Continental United States, she ventured to Canada, Hawaii, the Far East, Mexico, Scandinavia, Western Europe and The Holy Land. She planted the seeds for travel in her niece, Camille.
She leaves to cherish her memories 1 sister, Mary Northington, 2 nieces, Camille (William) Coleman, and Claudia (Herbert) Bigham, 1 nephew, Christopher (Belinda) Northington, 4 great-nieces, Noelle Milton, Natalie (Scott) Rossi, Nicole Hardy and Joy Moguel; 4 great-great-grandsons, Maurice (Shandale), Brandon, and Bryce Epps, Dallas Johnson and Nicholas Rossi; 2 great-great-granddaughters, Caprice and Nia Epps; 3 great-great-great nieces and 2 great-great-great-nephews; 1 cousin, Marie Smith, and devoted friends, Sam and Lillie Richmond.
Georgia was preceded in death by her parents, George and Lee Opie (Weir) Summers, beloved step-mother, Janie Summers, 3 sisters, twins, Caridad and Katie Summers and Marquita Brown; brother, Walter Whatley. A special thank you to the 2nd floor south staff of Kith Haven Nursing Home, Great Lakes Caring Hospice, Rev. Sharinese Jackson, and the Quinn Chapel family.
