POOLE, Duane Edward Died on August 18th in Grand Blanc, Michigan at the age of 82.

Visitation will be held 3-5 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, August 24, 2015 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road.

A Memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 25, 2015 at Grand Blanc United Methodist Church, 515 Bush Avenue, Grand Blanc, Rev. Patrick England, Rev. Roger Parker and Rev. Tom Tarpley will preside.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hurley Medical Center Auxiliary or Grand Blanc United Methodist Church.

Duane Edward Poole was born in Bad Axe, Michigan on January 15, 1933, the son of Alice Mae LaMar and Harry Allison Poole. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1951. Duane attended Albion College from 1951 to 1953 where he joined the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. On June 14, 1953 he married Eleanor Ruth Leavesley. Duane transferred to the University of Michigan where Eleanor was a student in the School of Nursing. In 1955 he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. From 1955 to 1957 Duane served in the United States Armed Forces where he attended the Army Information School at Fort Slocum, New York.

In 1957, Duane and Eleanor moved to Flint, Michigan where Duane worked for the Flint Journal as a writer for the next ten years. In addition to reporting the daily news, he also specialized in automotive news, music, entertainment and the arts. This included a regular column entitled, “The Intermission”, where he wrote about local arts and entertainment news in the Flint area. During his career as a journalist, he interviewed many celebrities and historical figures of his era, including Buckminster Fuller, Ralph Nader, Liberace and Lowell Thomas. In 1968 Duane left the Flint Journal and joined the Public Relations Department with General Motors. Over the next 25 years, he served as a member of the GM Corporate Staff, Regional Manager in Flint, Michigan and Atlanta, Georgia, Assistant Director of Public Relations for Chevrolet Motor Division, Director of Communications for GM Service Parts Operations and Director of Communications for the GM Health Care Initiative.

In addition to his vocation in journalism and public relations, Duane also had a great love for music. He served for many years as the organist and pianist at Trinity United Methodist Church in Flint where he was an active member for nearly 50 years. Duane also volunteered in the Lobby Shop of Hurley Medical Center and participated in a variety of volunteer boards and organizations throughout the community. Duane was also an avid amateur photographer who practiced his skills for many years as he and Eleanor traveled extensively throughout the United States and around the World.

Duane is survived by his wife, Eleanor R. Poole, Sons, David Poole and spouse Laura Poole, Steven Poole and spouse Joyce Schulte, Grandchildren Kimberly and spouse Jerry Winburn, Scott and Mehrvash Poole and Great Grandchildren Cara Winburn and Leily Poole.
