KEIM, Harold "Hal"- Age 83, of Swartz Creek, died May 29, 2016. Memorial services will be held 1 pm Friday, June 3, at Sharp Funeral Homes 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. Jack Minore officiating. Visitation will take place Thursday from 4-8 pm and Friday from noon until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may make contributions to the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan or to the charity of their choice.
Hal was born October 14, 1932, in Dearborn, the son of Gustav and Bertha Keim. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a very accomplished, educated man having started his educational journey at Fordson High School in Dearborn. He received his Associate Liberal Arts Degree from Dearborn Junior College and attended Denison University in Granville, OH. Hal attended the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and earned a Bachelor degree in Liberal Arts and earned a Masters in Education. He also attended Eastern Michigan University where he received his Masters of Literature degree. Hal taught English and social studies at Lowell Junior High School and Southwestern High School for eighteen years. He was the president of the United Teachers of Flint from 1975 until 1985, a lifetime member of the Michigan Education Association (MEA), and National Education Association (NEA), a charter member of the Swartz Creek Recycling Coalition, the treasurer of the Genesee County Hazardous Waste Coalition, the treasurer of the Swartz Creek Kiwanis, a member of the Genesee County Consumer Protection Bureau, the League of Women Voters, and Salem Housing.
Hal was a gentle, loving, soul who enjoyed family first. He was an inspiration to many as a teacher, union president, husband, and father. His pleasures included reading, baking cookies, concerts, plays, traveling, playing cards, playing free cell and spider solitaire, eating out, and helping others.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jeanette; children, Steven D. (Vera Kraft) Keim and Laura J. Enos; grandchildren, Charliene (Istvan) Lettang, Francessa Keim (Andrew Summerfield), Ian Enos, Ryan Enos, Sheena Enos, Georgianna Collier, and Josh Kraft; great grandchildren, Vladmir Brown, Freedom and Harmony Powers; brother, Raymond; brother-in-law, Gene (Diedra) Rewitzer.
He was preceded in death by his siblings, Elizabeth Cooper and Albert Keim.
