Woolworth, Jay D. – of Birch Run, age 83, died Saturday, May 30, 2020, at McLaren Flint. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 PM, Thursday, June 4, 2020, at Auto City Speedway in Clio. Don O’Guinn and Kim Christensen will officiate. A private burial will take place Friday at the Birch Run Cemetery. The family has requested that everyone wear casual clothing and racing shirts Thursday night if you have them. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family for a cemetery monument for Jay.
Jay was born May 23, 1937 in Clio, Michigan, to the late James and Mildred (Howard) Woolworth. He was a lifelong resident of the Birch Run – Clio area. Jay retired from Chevrolet Metal Fab in 1988 with 32 years of service. He married Sue Bradsher on May 16, 1986. Jay was involved in short track racing in Michigan for over 57 years. He was best known at Auto City and Dixie Motor Speedways in Clio and Birch Run. He won numerous championship races in various divisions at tracks in Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Pennsylvania and Canada - including four features in the Carling Circuit of Champions race series. Jay was inducted into the Michigan Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2003. He was loved and admired by race fans and drivers alike. He was a tough competitor but a true sportsman and gentleman to all. He was voted “Fan Favorite” by the Michigan Racing Scene magazine in 2002 and was honored numerous times as “Sportsman of the Year” at several area tracks. In the off season, Jay enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family.
Surviving are: Wife, Sue; 4 children: Debbie (Adolph) Borrego of Birch Run, Pam Lenhart of North Carolina, Ray Woolworth of Bridgeport, and Jennifer (Bob) Thompson of Montrose; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Bonita McFarlin and Connie Schuler; Numerous nieces and nephews.
