Shary Hammond - Horton, age 59 of Lapeer, Michigan went to be with her Lord and savior on September 19, 2013. Shary ended her long battle with cancer at her home surrounded by close family and friends. She was a woman that exemplified strength, love, and generosity. If there was a need in someone’s life, she did her best to help. After graduating from Fenton High School in 1972, most of her early life was spent as a dental hygienist and caring for her two young sons. She worked full-time while earning one of two bachelor degrees from the University of Michigan. She continued as a hygienist until a serious car accident injured her spine and made her unable to work. While she never considered herself a cat lady, she took in four strays over her life and they became some of her best friends. She would often say that if you can’t accept her cats, you couldn’t accept her. While the cats brought her happiness, nothing lit up her life like her grandchildren. She often said that her life was made whole when she became a grandmother. Shary accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and her faith grew stronger as she battled cancer. She told everyone she knew about the love of Christ. She knew that God’s love was not conditional and that He wants a relationship with all. Her family would like you to consider whether the stories of Christ’s love are true. Shary is survived by her husband Craig Horton, sons Ryan(Amy) Hammond of Texas and Jeff Hammond, mother Shirley “Chumma” Metiva (Lloyd), father Richard “Dick” Palmer (Shirley) of Florida, sisters Daelyn Pierce, Julie Spiller, and brother Rick Palmer (California) and their families, grandchildren Ethan, Dylan, and Madison, along with nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society, 1-800-227-2345. A memorial service will be held 10:30 am, Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W Hill Rd, Flint, Michigan, Pastor Bruce Garner officiating. Family will receive friends 9:30 a.m. Tuesday until the time of the service at the funeral home.
