LAZAR, Helen R. - Of Flint, passed away Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at Avalon Hospice surrounded by her loving family. She was 97 years old. Funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint, Reverend Father Joseph Peera officiating. Burial in Assyrian Cemetery. Visitation 12-8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Assyrian Cemetery or the charity of one’s choice.
Helen was born on December 24, 1914 in Yerevan, Russia. The daughter of Sam and Sherrin Esse, her family settled in Akron, Ohio before relocating to Clio, Michigan. She married Daniel J. Lazar on December 6, 1930 in Flint, Michigan and he preceded her in death on May 23, 1956.
Helen is survived by her son, Dennis R.(Karen P.), daughter, Jeanette M. MacDonald; “adopted” son, Charles A. Abraham;
grandchildren, Anne M. Henderson, Daniel A. Lazar, Jennifer A. Lazar and Dennis R. Lazar, Jr.;
great-grandchildren, Jacqueline M. and Elizabeth A. Henderson;
siblings, Frances Caine, Sarah Warda, Sam Esse and Martha Aldridge and many nieces and nephews.
Helen was also preceded in death by her daughter, June H. Lazar, son, Daniel J. Lazar, Jr., and son-in-law, Donald F. MacDonald, Jr.; sisters, Marian Langley and Esther Koshaba.
She was a charter member of Holy Apostolic Catholic (Assyrian) Church of the East. Helen was the consummate host in her home for family, friends, neighbors, out-of-towners and clergy who were served the best Assyrian cuisine. She worked tirelessly for her church chairing many dinners, bake sales and fundraisers. She was employed for many years at Truchan Cleaners and H & D Tuxedo. Our family was blessed to have had our mother for all of these years. “Ma” maintained a fabulous sense of humor and always kept everyone laughing and entertained. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.
