Terrance was born on April 16, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan, to Emmet J. Sheehan, Sr. and Pauline (Burns) Sheehan.
He married the love of his life, Darlene (Yatchak) Sheehan, on July 23, 1960.
He has long time affiliations with Holy Family Catholic Church in Grand Blanc, St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Flint and Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Burton.
Terrance was a renowned criminal attorney in Genesee County, handling many notable cases spanning the 1970s to early 2000s. With the help of his wife Darlene (whom he referred to as “brilliant and magnificent”) he ran a successful private legal practice for decades. He also was proud to enter the world of public service for several years in the role of Assistant Deputy Prosecutor for Genesee County, serving under Prosecutor Arthur Busch.
Terry was a proud Irishman and a founding member of the Genesee County chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and a founder of the Flint St. Patrick’s Day Parade, serving as its first Grand Marshall. Terry’s emerald green suit coat was his trademark. He lived large and was known for his extroverted personality and love of life. He loved the practice of law and was an avid reader, swimmer and sports enthusiast. He was a huge fan of college football, especially the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. He sponsored the Sheehan Attorney men’s softball team for 8 years, which went on to win the Union City Fields/Flint City Championship.
Terry Sheehan served as a mentor and inspiration to many in his legal practice and general love of his fellow man. He showed genuine enthusiasm and interest toward everyone he encountered, from the Governor to the waitress or the checkout clerk, always asking “Where did you go to school?” and sincerely interested in the life stories and backgrounds of those he encountered. As one of his grandsons summarized, “It is our job to carry on his work.”
Terry Sheehan is survived by his wife, Darlene (Yatchak) Sheehan;
his children, Denise D. Couling, Terrence M. Sheehan, and Martin J. Sheehan;
grandsons, Jonathan P. Couling, Christopher P. Couling and Gavin M. Sheehan;
his son-in-law, Mark E. Couling, and sister, Pauline Lacey, and a large extended family and many friends in the community.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Wellbridge of Fenton for the care Terry received. His devoted wife, Darlene, and eldest son, Terrence, had been his primary caretakers prior to his residency at Wellbridge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and siblings Sheila Ratcliff (Texas), Mary Niec (Clio) and Joseph E. Sheehan, Jr. (Bloomfield Hills).
