HEMPSTEAD, Barbara A. – of Davison, age 68, passed away February 5, 2014 at Genesys Hospice Center. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am Monday, February 10, 2014 at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, Davison. Burial will follow in Davison Cemetery. Visitation will be 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm on Sunday. The family has requested no flowers. Rather, that a donation be made to The Genesee County Autism Support and Resource Center, the Food Bank of Eastern Michigan or the Salvation Army.
Barb was born November 8, 1945 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of the late Willie and Erma (Grover) Olson. She married Michael Hempstead in June of 1969. He preceded her in death on November 11, 2012. Barb retired from Beecher Community Schools in 1996 after 25 years of teaching. She actively enjoyed her grandchildren, painting, stamping/crafting, reading, shopping, baking and visiting with neighbors and friends.
Barb is survived by daughter, Adrienne (Larry) Hanson; son, Scott Hempstead; grandchildren: Lars Hanson, Emma and Cayden Hempstead; and brothers, Bob Olson and Bill (Becky) Olson. Barb sends her love to her nieces and nephews and her great-nieces and great-nephews; her very special “little sister,” Betty “Bunny” Conley; and her long time, dear friends: Kathie Sanders, Gwen Hall and Pam Kvasnica. Barb wanted to recognize her wonderful neighbors, friends from book club, painting group and the Millington Bulldogs. The family sends special thanks to the staff at Genesys Convalescent/Hospice Center-the compassionate nurses, nursing assistants and other staff-especially Michelle, Lonnie and Tony for making Mom’s last wish of a visit home come true. Special appreciation to Dr. Joyce Fahrner, Dr. Chrisite Samuels and their wonderful staff for their tender care and concern for Barb as she battled Breast cancer as it spread. Thank you to everyone who visited Barb, ran her errands, provided words of encouragement or just sat to chat with her at home or hospice, know that it meant the world to her and her family.
