SMITH, Donald G. - of Flint, age 72, passed away peacefully Sunday, December 9, 2018 in Grand Blanc, after a three-year battle with cancer. In order to allow family and friends the opportunity to enjoy their scheduled holiday plans, there will be no immediate family visitation. In its place, a public celebration of life will be held in the Summer of 2019. Details will be announced at a later date. The family requests that memorial contributions may be made to Mangrum Cemetery in Black Oak, Arkansas; Kingwood Church of Christ in Houston, Texas; or The Valley School in Flint. Inurnment will take place in Mangrum Cemetery in Black Oak, Arkansas.
Don was born on September 6, 1946, in Black Oak, Arkansas, the seventh of eight children born to the late William Paul and Minerva (Taylor) Smith. He graduated from Wilmot High School in 1964. Don later served in the U.S. Marine Corps and attended Arkansas A&M College.
Mr. Smith was an ironworker for 25 years and was a retired member of Iron Workers Local #25. During his time as an ironworker, he had the opportunity to work on the crews on several memorable projects, including working on the construction crew of the Palace of Auburn Hills. Don later worked in the reconstruction of the Ford Factory in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Hugo.
In his younger years, Don was involved in stock car racing and enjoyed playing basketball. In his retirement, he enjoyed nothing more than spending time with his family, enjoying a particularly close bond with his grandchildren.
Surviving are: Daughter, Sabrina (Rob) Mitchell of Holland; Son, Michael Smith of Sherwood, Ark.; Son, Paul (Stacy) Smith of Russellville, Ark.; Daughter, Emily Fox of Flint; Five grandchildren: Braum Smith, Briley Hild, Audrey Smith, Jack Smith, and Rex Smith; Former wife, Jill (Larry) Day of Grand Blanc, with whom he spent 21 years and raised two children; Sister, Norma (John) Terry of Grand Blanc; Brothers: Billy Smith of Eudora, Ark., and Paul (Marjorie) Smith of Monte Alto, Texas; Uncle, Paul Taylor of Caraway, Ark.; Dear friends: Bill, Margaret, and Cindy Childers of Flint; Several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving family members and dear friends, particularly his classmates in the Wilmot High School Class of 1964, whose constant love and support has provided great comfort both to him and his family. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Minerva Smith; in-laws, Jack and Jean Kaiser; Sister, Sue (Malcolm) Barrow; Brother, Jerry (Lue Ellen) Smith; Sister, Ora Ann O’Neill; Sister Martha Lu and “brother” Jack Harper; Nephews: Michael Paul Smith, David Patterson Smith, John Edgar Terry, William Gale Terry; Longtime friend, Ronnie Fulbright.
The family extends special gratitude to his medical team at M.D. Anderson in Houston, Texas, including Drs. Eric Jonasch and Jose Karam and their staff; as well as Jim Stewart of the Kingwood Church of Christ in Houston and the Medical Apartment Ministry.
