Leo Emery Sutherland, age 79, of Higgins Lake, died Friday, October 4, 2013 at home surrounded by his loving family. Visitation will be 3-5 and 6-8 PM Monday and funeral services officiated by Dr. James N. Kent will be 1 PM Tuesday all at Walsh Funeral Home in Roscommon. Interment will be at Crestview Cemetery in Markey Township.
Leo was born July 6, 1934 in Markey Township the son of William Benjamin and Edna Mae (Lumbert) Sutherland. He proudly served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957. Moving to Flint he was employed by General Motors Fisher Body and Buick for 28 years retiring in 1992. Following his retirement he moved back to Higgins Lake where he attended Markey Church. An avid outdoorsman he enjoyed fishing, hunting, mushrooming, gardening and golf. He loved playing card games of all kinds and all TV sports involving Detroit teams. Leo had the opportunity to attend his first Detroit Lions game, the 2013 home opener. With some help from Hospice of Helping Hands and the generosity of the Detroit Lions management, pregame passes were waiting at the gate allowing him and his family to go through the tunnel and watch the pregame on the field at the 20-yard line where Calvin Johnson presented Leo with a football and “gave him knuckles.”
He married Arthella M. “Peggy” Wykoff in Roscommon on January 1, 1983 and she preceded him in death January 14, 2006. He was also preceded by his parents; brothers, Roger and Glenn Sutherland and sisters, Yula Apps and Leona Lancaster.
Surviving are four children, Charlene Palmer of Flint, Marilyn (Edward) Rykulski of Fenton, Cindy Haviland of Ionia and Leo Sutherland of Flint; seven grandchildren, Joshua, Samantha, Kendall, Katrina, India, Michael and Madison; three great-grandchildren and special friend, Judy Purkey.
The family requests donations in Leo’s memory are made to Hospice of Helping Hands, 335 E. Houghton Avenue, West Branch, Michigan 48651.
