VERHAEGHE Mary, Margaret (Ruddy) – age 87, passed away Saturday, May 26, 2012 at Heartland Health Care Center in Flushing. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11 AM Wednesday, May 30, 2012 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, G-5199 Richfield Rd., Flint; Rev. George Puthenpeedika celebrant and Rev. Fr. Paul Ruddy concelebrant. Burial will be at St. Robert Catholic Cemetery, Flushing. Visitation will be 1-4 PM Monday, 1-4 PM & 6-8 PM Tuesday at Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Rd., Davison. On Wednesday, there will be visitation at the church from 10 AM until the time of service. A Rosary will be prayed 7 PM Tuesday. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Francis Prayer Center.

Mary was born in Montrose Township on June 14, 1924, daughter of the late Harold and Margaret (Reddy) Ruddy. The second living child of what was to become a large and loving family devoted to their Catholic Faith and to their Irish heritage. She graduated at age 16, as Salutatorian of her high school class at St. Michael Catholic School in Maple Grove, in 1941. Mary went on to complete her education at Baker Business School in Flint. She began her career at the Flint Journal Classified Department, moving from there to the City of Flint Traffic Department, and then many years as a legal secretary at Carr & Wumpke Attorneys. As Mary advanced her career, she became very active in the National Secretary’s Association. On January 17, 1959, she married Virgil Verhaeghe and moved graciously from the business world into her new career as a devoted wife and mother. Mary loved being a mother and was absolutely fascinated, by her four precious grandchildren. She was an active member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Flint, always on call to help with church activities. Mary especially enjoyed her quilting club, where they worked together to make a beautiful quilt each year to be raffled at the annual church festival.

Mary is survived by three loving children, Alan (Cindy) Verhaeghe of Swartz Creek, Victor (Kelly Deadmon) Verhaeghe of New York, Karen Verhaeghe of Durham, NC; grandchildren, Alex, Peter and Valerie Verhaeghe of Swartz Creek, Flynn Verhaeghe of New York; very special sister, Catherine (Bill) Flynn of New Lothrop; brothers, Rev. Fr. Paul Ruddy of Brooklyn, MI, Daniel (Jane) Ruddy, Maurice (Betty) Ruddy of Chesaning, Arthur (Janet) Ruddy of New Lothrop; sisters-in-law, Betty and Patricia Ruddy; many, many nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil on February 4, 2003; parents, Harold and Margaret; brothers, Raymond, Robert and Ralph.
