BLACK, Robert J. – Of Flint, age 88, died Monday, March 19, 2012 at Brian's House of Davison. Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, March 23, 2012 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Dr. Robert Johnston officiating. Burial in Sunset Hills Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Upper Peninsula Bible Camp, PO BOX 338 Little Lake, MI 49833. Visitation 3-8 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday until the time of the service at the funeral home. Robert J. Black was born in July 7, 1923 in Boyne City, MI and was the 2nd of 4 children born to Robert and Julia Black. On December 2, 1950 he married Virginia Stewart in Flint and she survives. He was led by his father to receive Christ as his personal Savior at an early age following a Sunday evening service at the Flint Gospel Assembly. Mr. Black was a dedicated Christian worker helping in the 50’s-70’s at Pasadena Ave. Gospel and later at Civic Heights Bible Chapel in Flint, serving on the elder board. He helped in the construction of Countryside Bible Chapel in Owosso. He developed a love for Upper Peninsula Bible Camp serving as a Board member for over 42 years and helping out in building and maintaining the grounds and acting as Director for Service Week camp for a number of years. He served as the Flint area liaison for the bus ministry to camp through his adult years. Mr. Black drove the first bus to UPBC carrying campers in 1956 for a ‘teen convention’. Mr. Black graduated from Flint Central high School. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II stationed on Honolulu, Hawaii. Bob was employed at DuPont in Flint, MI retiring in 1984 after 36 years. He was active in the DuPont Flint Federal Employees Credit Union helping audit their books and served as their Treasurer in his retirement for a number of years.
Besides, his wife, Virginia, he leaves three children, Barbara (John) Snider, Robert W. (Denise) Black and Bruce (Cheryl) Black. Mr. Black had 9 grandchildren, Megan (Brian) Teegardin, Matthew (Natasha) Snider, Jennifer (Matt) Roosien, Stephanie Black, Jason Black, Sarah Black, R.J. (April) Black, Jessica (Billy) Roy and Trevor Black and two great-grandchildren, Addison and Gavin Roosien. Mr. Black is survived by a brother, Joseph (Lois) Black and two sisters, Mary Carleton and Maxine Hackley. Your condolences may be shared with the family at www.swartzfuneralhomeinc.com.
