MOORE, Antionette Sylvia - Mother of Carol LaCross-passed away on Saturday, June 23, 2018.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 30, 2018 at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Pastor Paul Ytterock officiating.
Burial in Evergreen Cemetery.
Visitation 2-5 p.m. and 7- 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Antionette was born on May 3, 1917 in Chicago, Illinois, to Anton and Anna Liska, but she and her 7 brothers and sisters grew up on a farm in Beaverton, Michigan. She graduated from the Liska School when she was 16 years old and moved to Flint to be a nanny/housekeeper for several notable Flint business entrepreneurs.
On August 23, 1937, she married John Moore, and they were together until his death in March of 1972.
Antionette worked at several places during her long, active life. She worked in the cafeteria at Buick Motor Division, but spent the majority of her adult life in the dairy and produce departments at the A & P (Farmer Jack’s) on Carpenter Road, Flint and Holly Road, Grand Blanc.
Most of the people in Grand Blanc knew her as “Annie”. She was a member of the UFCW International Union. She retired at 65 and spent the rest of her life serving the community, caring for her elderly neighbors, preparing ethnic foods, gardening, and keeping her huge home in pristine condition.
She was a mentor and inspiration to her daughter, granddaughters, and grandson.
She volunteered in the gift shop at McLaren Hospital for many years, and people there will remember her as the dedicated lady who sat in the foyer of that hospital selling tickets to help several charities. She also volunteered for the Buick Open at Warwick Hills.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Flint and previously one of the founding members of Kirkridge Presbyterian Church in Grand Blanc, where she was a Deacon.
At both churches, she served on many committees, but her specialty was preparing and serving food for weddings and funerals.
Fiercely independent, she never asked for help and amazingly managed to fix any problem confronting her. Well into her 90’s, she planted, grew and maintained beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, shoveled snow, helped friends by delivering meals, providing them transportation to appointments, running their errands, and caring for them when sick.
Antionette was a compassionate, loving, and generous grandma to her grandchildren, Lisa, Annette and Christopher. She openly shard her experiences, positive and negative, hoping they would learn from them. Her advice, sometimes potent, was always meant to be constructive.
Here to remember her amazing attitude, stamina, and sense of humor are her daughter, Carol LaCross;
her grandchildren, Dr. Lisa (Jeremy) Gerak, Annette LaCross and Christopher (Sharon) LaCross; her great-grandsons, Jake and Johnny Gerak.
Sadly, her sister and best friend, Irene White, passed away a few months before her.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Flint.
