Susie Hackett (Kish)

Born: 3/23/1918
Died: 5/14/2012
Age: 94
Community: Flint, MI

Susie (Kish) Hackett grew up in a large and loving family which always seemed to find humor in situations, despite their modest means. Having been born in New Brunswick, N.J. to Hungarian immigrant parents who met and married there before coming to Flint, she played high school basketball, participated in business co-op, and graduated a semester early from Flint Northern High School in 1935. Despite being in the middle of the Great Depression, Susie was immediately employed as an operator at Michigan Bell Telephone. After marrying Donald Hackett in 1939 and starting a family, she began many years of work at Salle’s children’s clothing store and, later, became the office manager of the Flint office of Roney & Co. investment firm. Susie had a love for dancing her whole life through, from Knickerbocker’s Dance Hall to line dancing at the Carman Senior Center. She always took great pride in her appearance and made healthy lifestyle choices. She had a life-long love of gardening and further displayed it through her regular patronage of the Flint Farmer’s Market for many decades. Susie grew up in the Hungarian Reformed Church on Campo and, later, Delaware streets, was married in and raised her children at Central Christian Church, and spent many more recent years as a member of First Presbyterian Church. She played the organ, was a member of the Flint Theatre Organ Club, and enjoyed many varied performances at venues throughout the community. Starting in 1946, Susie became a life-long member of the Washington Pre-School Child Study Club which, in later years, transitioned into the “10-Over” investment club, but was always a life-long source of stability and support for its members. Susie is survived by her sister, Elizabeth “Liz” Munro, sisters-in-laws Arlene Kish and Florence Kish, daughters, Carol Baker and Jean (Charles) Mitton, son, Alan (Elizabeth) Hackett, and grandchildren, Elizabeth Baker, Christine (Greg) Boyette, Matthew Mitton, Shannon Mitton, Kathryn Hackett, and Meredith Hackett, and great-grand children Evan and Joshua Boyette, and many nieces, nephews, grand-nephews, grand-nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. She was preceded in death by parents, John and Zsuzsana Kish, brothers John (Nelle) Kish, Jess (Mildred) Kish, Joseph Kish, Steve Kish, and sisters, Mary (Mervin) Bevington and Irene (Adolf) Wagner, and brother-in-law, George Munro.
