James was born in Flint, Michigan on June 15, 1928, the son of James and Mildred (Uttley) Crannie. He graduated in 1946 from Hoover High School. He married Barbara Oliver the same year and together they have four surviving children, Gordon Crannie of Flint, Ricky Crannie of Flint, Lori (Dean) Henry of Flushing, Todd (Lisa) Crannie of Flushing; 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Jim was a General Contractor in Flint most of his life. He owned and operated Crannie Construction Co., Inc. in Flint until the time of his retirement in 1992. He was also a very active member of the Northwest Flint Optimist Club for many years. His hobby was hunting. He never missed an opening day until he reached the age of 80. He had also made several trips out west to hunt in the Tetons and Rockies and his stories of these adventures were awe inspiring. Jim’s other hobbies included coin collecting, dirt bike riding, and owning and restoring antique automobiles. His talent and knowledge at restoring the old cars was impeccable. He had belonged to many car clubs over the years and had enjoyed car tours and shows, only missing two Hershey, Pennsylvania car swap meets since 1977. Jim was so happy to have participated in the antique car shows in Greenfield Village and Sloan Golden Memories in September.
On September 11, 1987, Jim began his life’s journey with his love, Jane (Janie). They celebrated 24 wonderful years while attending the Greenfield Village car show in Dearborn. Jane owns a daycare based in their home in the Mott Park neighborhood and together they have taken care and mentored many children from the area. When not at home in Flint, they have enjoyed their place “at the lake.” They have spent many wonderful times at Holiday Shores in Durand and have made many wonderful friends. They also enjoyed their many travels along the Lake Michigan shoreline and their most recent trip to Agawa Canyon.
Jim is survived by his love, Jane Zitterkoph, his four children and their families; his and Jane’s special “kid” Brewster; brother, Daniel (Lorraine) Crannie of Mikado, MI; sister, Alvena Mussey of Franklin, New Hampshire; Jane’s many family members; special friends, Julie Bourque, Charles and Shari Kelly, Mike and Stacey Schaal, Devin and Debbie Shaw and his many wonderful friends from “Clio Coffee,” Holiday Shores, and their very special daycare children and their families. Jim was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Cheryl and Vickie and a sister, Mildred.
Jane wishes to thank the staff of Hurley 9E, your love and care compares to no other, Dr. Raouf Mikhail and staff and everyone else in Jim’s care team throughout his illness. She also wishes to thank everyone whose love and support encouraged and brightened the life of Jim.
