Shirley “Sue” Ann (Bates) Gadola, loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother proceeded to heaven to join her beloved husband Thomas on Thursday, June 27. Sue was born in Marietta, Ohio in 1935 to Bernard R. and Ursula Mary Bates and the family moved to Flint during the Second World War. Sue valued the education she received from St. Matthew High School in Flint and graduating from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, where she met her future husband, Thomas L. Gadola, at the Newman Catholic Center on campus. Tom and Sue married in 1958 in Flint and in 1964 they moved into the house in Grand Blanc where they would raise their four children and where Sue would live for the next fifty-five years. The pride and joy of her life was her large and loving family. To her eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren she was known as their beloved “GG.” She enjoyed peaceful summers at the family cottage in Tawas, winters in Largo, Fl, and traveling with Tom to Europe and elsewhere. Sue and Tom hosted wonderful, well-attended tailgates with family and friends on Saturdays for the Michigan Football games, with Sue spending many hours in advance preparing unique and interesting culinary delights. To Sue, love of family and devotion to her Catholic faith came first. She became a master gardener and put those skills on display through her lovely flower and vegetable garden behind her home. She was a gourmet cook and enjoyed entertaining her friends and family. Sue was known for her warm and outgoing personality: she truly cared about people and their stories and possessed a clever sense of humor. She enjoyed her career of over 30 years in dental hygiene. Sue leaves behind her loving family; daughter Martha A. Gadola (Jay Holmes M.D.) and grandson Nicholas Gadola Holmes; son Miles T. Gadola (Karri) and grandchildren Nicole Korte Kelley (Sean), Zachariah Korte (Morgan), Logan and Noah Gadola; Patrick L. Gadola D.D.S. (Julia Gudmundsen D.D.S.) and grandsons Carter and Evan Gadola; and Hon. John A. Gadola (Jill) and granddaughters Hannah, Micali, Riley, and Lauren Gadola. Also, great- grandchildren Nora and Adelaide Kelley and William, Nolan, and Henry Korte. She also leaves behind to cherish her memory her beloved brother Fr. Donald J. Bates O.S.A. Sue is preceded in death by her loving husband Thomas, her parents, and her brother Robert Bates. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 16 at 10am at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 706 Beach St., Flint with burial at Evergreen Cemetery in Grand Blanc. Visitation will be at Hill Funeral Home, 11723 S. Saginaw St., Grand Blanc on Monday, July 15 from 12-3pm and 4-8pm with a rosary service at 7:30pm. The family will also receive visitors at church one hour prior to mass, beginning at 9am. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to St. Matthew Catholic Church. |
