DI GIACOMO, Delores Anne

Age 72, of Grand Blanc, Michigan passed at home on Monday, June 5, 2017. She taught English, debate, theater, and literature within the Carman-Ainsworth school district for thirty-nine years
.
She was born Delores Corriveau in Grafton, North Dakota on March 1st 1945 to Norbert Corriveau and Kathleen Dolan. She lived in rural poverty for most of her childhood, but she worked hard and attended Bemidji State University, where she met her husband, Ronald Di Giacomo. She obtained her bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree and married Ronald on June 3rd 1967. They celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary just two days before her death.

As a teacher, she spent many, many long hours helping students both in and out of the classroom. She coached debate, directed plays, and was one of the founding members of GenNet, a technology-based distance learning tool created by the Genesee Intermediate School District. She, along with her husband, was actively involved in the Carman-Ainsworth community, regularly spotting for football games or ushering for events. Everyone knew her and loved her as “Mrs. D.”

Outside of her professional life, she lived a life of service. She served on the Genesee District Library board, taught for General Motors, ran numerous successful political campaigns, served as an officer of one of the first Michigan charter schools, and ushered at the Fisher Theater in Detroit. She was deeply religious and active in Holy Redeemer Church, where she made the alleviation of poverty and hunger her mission. Not content with just donating money, she took an active and on-the-ground role in Holy Redeemer’s poverty outreach program in retirement. She donated time to the YWCA and the Carman-Ainsworth Athletic Hall of Fame, and she served in The Delta Kappa Gamma Society (an international society for women educators) for twenty-five years, which recognized her for her excellence in teaching and dedication to education by granting her its “woman of distinction” award.

She is survived by Ronald, her husband, Kristina, her daughter, John, her son, Brooke, her daughter in law, and Isabella, her granddaughter. She was stability in times of chaos, not just for her family, but for her friends and her students. She will be missed, but never forgotten.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1227 East Bristol Road, Burton, Michigan, Father Steve Anderson officiating.
