ORTMAN, Carl Hall, age 88, of Gaines, passed away Thursday, January 26, 2012 at Memorial Health Care, Owosso. Funeral Mass will be celebrated 12:30 p.m. Monday, January 30, 2012 at St. Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 4413 Morrish Rd., Swartz Creek. Fr. Dan Kogut celebrant. The family will receive friends 11:30 a.m. Monday until time of Mass at church. Interment will follow at Great Lakes National Cemetery, 4200 Belford Rd., Holly. Visitation will be 2:00-8:00 p.m. Sunday at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek. A rosary will be prayed 7PM Sunday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Swartz Creek Athletic Booster Club. Carl Was born December 6, 1923 in Flint Township, the son of the late Curtis D. and Ida Bell (Reid) Ortman. He married Eleanor Guria in Durand on February 14, 1953. Carl was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army serving in Okinawa, Japan. He was the owner and operator of Ortman Excavating, starting the business in 1955 and retiring in 2005 after 50 years of dedication. Carl was friend to all and had an inner strength that he naturally shared which encouraged others to be their best. During his last years of illness, he was an example of what real courage and "being tough" meant. To his family, he will always be a hero. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Eleanor; two daughters, Teresa "Terry" Standen (Mike) and Christine Kovalcik both of Swartz Creek; four grandchildren, Mandy Lintz (Jeremey), Tiffany Mysen (Ryan), Stacey Kovalcik, Benjamin Carl Kovalcik all of Swartz Creek; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Dylan Lintz; sister-in-law Mickie Corcoran of Owosso; his beloved cat, Ladybug; and many honorary grandchildren. He was also preceded in death by his brother and wife, Jack and Betty Ortman. The family extends many thanks to Memorial Hospital of Owosso, especially Dr. Rany and Dr. Salman.
