Of Flushing, age 69, passed away peacefully at his residence on Sunday, May 6, 2012, after a long and courageous battle with cancer and diabetes. Memorial service will be celebrated at 11am Wednesday, May 9 at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 W. Hill Road in Flint. Family will receive friends from 10am until the time of the service. Additional visitation hours are 3-8pm Tuesday at Swartz.

In lieu of flowers (due to allergies), contributions may be made to Whaley Children’s Center, Flint Institute of Arts, or a charity of your choice.

Doug was born in Flint on June 18, 1942, the son of Roy and Ruth (Hunt) Nickel. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, great uncle, cousin and friend. A lifelong loyal resident of Flushing, Douglas was educated at Flushing High School, graduating class of 1961. He served in the US Air Force Security Division as Staff Sergeant, 1961-1965, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, and Crete, Greece. Following his return, he was self-employed as a real estate broker, residential/commercial builder and developer, and entrepreneur for 46 years, including a 6-year building partnership with loyal brother, Gary Nickel. Also, proud founder and owner of Safety Lock Storage.

Doug was an involved member and supporter of many local associations and causes, including DeMolay, Degree of Chevalier; Michigan Jaycees as Secretary, Treasurer, President and National Senator; Genesee County Home Builders Association, Board of Directors; NIPP (Flint Neighborhood Improvement and Preservation), Board of Directors; Whaley Children’s Center, active volunteer for almost 20 years; Member of Snow Shoe Hunt Club, Hubbard Lake; beloved clown in the Flushing Parade with brother, Gary, and sister, Debi, for 10 years.

His sense of humor and rare ability to light up the room allowed Doug to touch the hearts of many. He will be dearly missed by his wife of 16 years, Colleen (Holmes). They shared an amazing life filled with family, friends, northern Michigan boating and exotic international travels. He is survived by his four children who adore him, Michele (Chris) Frasz, Julie (Shawn) Murphy, Angie (Guy) Busch and Greg (Leanna) Nickel, and their mother Sue (Malcolm) MacLean. Eight grandchildren, Lydia and Norah Frasz, Cole and Cameron Murphy, Sydney and Aidan Busch, Scarlet and Lylah Nickel. Sister Debi (Gary) Sanborn, sister-in-law Annette Nickel, Aunt Mary Feller, Aunt Judy (Ron) Frazier, and several cousins. Special nieces and nephews, Chris Nickel, Sara (Chris) Anderson, Ashley and Todd Davison, Julia Boss, and great niece Emma Kate Anderson. Wife Colleen’s parents, Robert (Kathy) Holmes and Jackie Holmes. Doug was preceded in death by mother Ruth Nickel, father Roy Nickel and brother Gary Nickel.
