June Rae Austin, age 71, of Flint, formerly of Owosso, passed away Tuesday, January 10th, 2012 at Avalon Hospice in Flint Township. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM on Monday, January 16th from the Mowen Funeral Home - William A. Scarlett Memorial Chapel. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Garden Cemetery. Visitation will be on Sunday at the funeral home from 4 PM to 8 PM.
June was born in Owosso, Michigan on June 24, 1940, the daughter of the late Robert Darwin and Viola May (Fairchild) Austin. She attended Dye School in Flint Township. She started her career as a dietary aide and cook at Winchester hospital in Flint and worked many years at other medical facilities. She was volunteer Girl Scout leader for many years. She enjoyed the Red Hatters, going to the Burton Senior Center, baking special cakes for her grandchildren, beautiful wedding cakes and made a cake that fed 1000 people for the the Flint Baptist Temple 75th anniversary. She also enjoyed sewing Halloween costumes, camping and spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her children, daughter, Brenda (Perkins) and Rodger Rainey; two sons, Earl Taylor and Larry Bensett. She is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley (George) Crow, Alice (Clayton) Hollister, Darwina Austin; brother, Robert (Darla Cox) Austin; special cousin, Marilyn Hemenway of Vancouver, Washington.
She is preceded in death by daughter, Donna (Perkins) Ross; parents and sister, Janice.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Bird Feeding Fund at Avalon Hospice.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff at Avalon Hospice for their wonderful care, love and dignity they have demonstrated towards our sweet mother and to our family during her stay there.
