BLAKELY, Valerie G. - of Clio, age 79, died Sunday, May 19, 2024, at her residence. Honoring her wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial will be held at 2:30PM Monday, October 7, 2024, in Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, Michigan.
Val was born March 14, 1945, in Flint, Michigan, to the late Harold and Marie (Anich) Hoffman. Val was the CEO and founder of her own company for over 50 years, her family. While managing her household, she also worked as a professional cleaner for Dauner Haus Senior Apartments in Fenton, Michigan, as well as several apartment complexes in the Flint area and numerous personal residences. Val married Steve Blakely on July 13, 1996, enjoying 26 years of traveling, gambling, bickering at each other, and Steve’s practical jokes until his death in 2023. Val was also a very frugal shopper and frequented rummage sales across Michigan. She had a keen eye for finding a great deal that she would flip for profit. But, if that deal was something regarding knitting or crocheting, most likely she was going to use that and make a nice blanket or something similar for her family. Val was also a big fan of the casinos and had the nickname “Slot Machine Mama”. She loved animals, having been a fur-mom to many pets through the years - including a recent clan of kittens who adopted her. One of her passions was gardening. Every year she would grow lots of vegetables and beautiful flowers. Her green thumb was evident by her ability to take a struggling plant and turn it into a beautiful piece of living art. She was also incredibly gifted at locating cars that resembled her own in parking lots. More than once she had to remove her groceries from a car after it wouldn’t start with her key. Val wasn't much of a sports person, but one time she decided to hit a golf ball while her family was over for a gathering. She took one swing and promptly hit the ball straight into her mailbox, bouncing directly back into the neighbor's yard barely missing their car. That was the end of Val's golfing career. The family would like to thank the Genesee County Sheriff's Office Paramedics division, the Genesee County Medical Examiner Office, and the O’Guinn Family Funeral Homes for their compassion and assistance during this time.
