COTNER, Lucinda M. “Luci” - Of Flint, age 82, passed away after a brief illness Thursday, May 30, 2013 at her home.
Visitation 12-8pm Tuesday and 10am Wednesday until the time of service at the funeral home.
Funeral service will be held 11am Wednesday, June 5, 2013
at the Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Road, Flint,
Pastor Jim Garfield of Higher Ground Ministries officiating.
Luci will be laid to rest beside her husband, Walter in Flint Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Higher Ground Church in her memory.
Lucinda was born in Boston, MA on July 12, 1930, the daughter of Peter and Mary Mendoza. She met and married Navy man Walter Lowell Cotner on December 6, 1948. They moved to Kalamazoo, while Walter attended college, and then to his hometown of Flint, Michigan where they raised a family of four children. Luci worked her way through college while raising her family and graduated from the University of Michigan-Flint with a teaching degree. She later earned her Master’s Degree while continuing her work at the Flint Public Schools. Her entire teaching career of 23 years was spent at Freeman Elementary teaching third grade. She made many lifelong friends there and remained in contact with some of her former students. Upon her retirement she traveled with her many friends to other countries and throughout the U.S., mostly to Arizona and Canada Creek Ranch in Atlanta, MI. Luci was a member of Higher Ground Ministries, Friends in Christ, and was recognized as Sunday School Teacher of the Year. She spent time painting, crochet and needlework, and enjoying her friends while shopping and dining out.
Luci was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Cotner, her parents, Peter and Mary Mendoza of Massachusetts, and Russel and Florence Cotner of Flint.
Surviving are her children, Keith Cotner of Mississippi, Denise Colley, Bradley (Barbara) Cotner and Sharon (Steve) Lucero;
brother-in-law, Douglas (Sharon) Cotner;
many grandchildren, Heather Colley, Kate Cotner, Erika Cotner, Kyle Cotner, Kurt Blevins, Katrina Blevins, Mike Lucero, Josh (Jen) Lucero and Kevin (Heather) Lucero;
five great-grandchildren, Zoey Colley, Jacob Colley, Alyssa Lucero, Charlotte Bowlby and Gage Lucero; many nieces and nephews.
