Born: 10/31/1945
Died: 6/13/2024
Age: 78
Community: Davison, MI

Lawrence (Larry) Paul Dewley went home to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday, June 13th, 2024, Larry was 78 years old. He was born on October 31st, 1945, in Fort Fairfield Maine, the son of Lewis and Eliza (Ruff) Dewley. He left his earthly body from the effects of Alzheimer’s disease surrounded by his family at Vibrant Care Living in Durand Michigan.

Larry served our great country in the Navy during the Vietnam War from 1964 to 1967, where he served on the U.S.S. Sylvania. Upon returning home in 1967 he soon married Deborah E. Dewley (Forbes) in December 1967, who predeceased him in November 1978. He worked for The Genesee County Road Commission, where he retired from in 1995. Larry shared the past nineteen years with his wife Sharon Dewley (Zahm), they were married on July 9th, 2005, in Davison Michigan.

Larry enjoyed fishing from a very young age. He grew up fishing the streams and brooks around the Aroostook River in Northern Maine. He and Debbie moved to Michigan in 1969. He continued his hobby of fishing and taught his children the same skills and respect for wildlife. He also loved to golf. He passed that skill onto his children and spent many hours teaching them how to golf and many other sports. His home in Davison was the place for many hours of back yard baseball games, basketball in the driveway where any of the neighbors were welcome to join in on the fun and competition. Larry was an excellent mechanic and there was almost always a vehicle in the garage being repaired-usually to help and assist a friend or any person in need. He spent many hours modifying Heidi’s “75” Monte Carlo and John’s “67” Camaro. Many of his brothers also moved to Michigan and the families were always very close and spent most holidays together. The Dewley’s were an extremely close family. Vacations were always spent going “home” to Caribou and Fort Fairfield. Later in life he took up duck and goose hunting where he and his son John spent many hours together. He also enjoyed ballroom dancing and was an excellent dancer and would take his granddaughters Amber and Alana to every Daddy-Daughter dance and show off his skills and his beautiful granddaughters. He loved watching, Rylie, his granddaughter at her baton competitions and as a Crimsonette for Alabama. And his grandsons Hunter and Zach playing soccer and baseball respectively. One of Larry’s greatest accomplishments would be his sobriety. He joined Alcoholics Anonymous in 1987 and never touched a drop of alcohol again. He became a sponsor to many, as well as, leading many AA meetings through out his life. He and Sharon moved to Florida full time in 2016 and spent the next five years there enjoying retirement that involved golfing, softball, dancing, fishing and many hours spent with new and old friends. Finally, Larry loved Jesus, his country and most of all his family. He was an honest man, extremely hard working and generous. If you did not personally know him…I am sorry, but if you were blessed to call him son, brother, husband, dad, uncle, grandpa, friend, ect., then you know all that has been written here is only a small fraction of the life and accomplishments of Larry Dewley.

Larry was one of sixteen children to Lewis and Eliza; he was their 13th child. He had twelve brothers and three sisters. In addition to his parents, Mr. Dewley was predeceased by ten of his brothers and one of his sisters; Roy, Henry, Arthur, Chester, Lester, Reginald, Lewis Daniel Jr., Truman, Ralph, Harold and Bertha. He is survived by his wife Sharon Dewley, daughter and son-in-law Heidi and Robert Ellsworth, his son and fiancé John Dewley and Kymm Heyman. Two stepchildren Gabrielle and Matthew Whitehead and Micheal and Kathrine Zahm. Two brothers Earl Dewley and Guy and Peggy Dewley, two sisters Thelma (Dewley) and Roy Curtis and Gloria (Dewley) and Gary Larson.
