Clarkson, Donn of Montrose, age 90, died at home on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 at 4:30 a.m. Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 12, 2016, at Central Church of the Nazarene, 1261 W. Bristol Rd., Flint. Pastor Jon Gildner will officiate. A private burial will take place at Flushing Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Friday at Rossell Funeral Home and 10 a.m. Saturday at the church until the time of the service. If desired, memorial contributions may be made to Central Church of the Nazarene and Eastside Mission in Flint.
Donn was born in Flint, Michigan on November 3, 1925, the son of William Jay and Mary Estelle (Sanborn) Clarkson. He graduated from Northern High School in Flint, where he enjoyed participating in the A Capella Choir. On January 31, 1953, he married Jean Douglas in Auburn Hills, Michigan. He received a BA in Business at Western Michigan University, graduating in 1954. He purchased and ran Donn's Hardware in Flint until 1960 when he began his teaching career in elementary education at Westwood Heights Schools. He attended graduate classes at Michigan State University and Eastern Michigan University. From 1964 to 1972, Donn was a contract employee for NASA. He drove a NASA Spacemobile van filled with models of spacecraft and lectured in schools across the Midwest and in Canada. In the summer, he conducted workshops for teachers at colleges in Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, and Indiana. In 1972, he returned to the classroom, teaching in Carmen-Ainsworth Schools, retiring in 1989. He enjoyed contact with former students over the years and hearing about their accomplishments. Donn was an active member of Central Church of the Nazarene, Flint. He enjoyed raising a variety of animals, from chickens to draft horses, on his small farm, Thimble Ranch, near Montrose. He took great pleasure in hosting parties for friends and family,
Donn was called The Fount of All Knowledge by his family and he was always ready with an answer to any query. “I have a question,” his children would ask. “I have an answer. Let's see if they match,” was his reply.
He will be greatly missed by his wife of 63 years, Jean; son, Benjamin and wife Vicki (Beatley) Clarkson of Clio; daughter, Mary and husband Clarence Rempel of Flushing; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Clarkson) and Steven Zill of Tampa, Florida, Emily Clarkson of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Benjamin and Jonathan Rempel of Flushing; great-grandsons, Jackson and Milan Zill of Tampa, Florida. Donn was preceded in death by his grandson, Ryan Rempel.
