Verlyn J. Drake, Sr., age 89 of Morrice past away Sunday, May 31, 2015 at Oliver Woods in Owosso.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Watkins Brothers Funeral Home, Perry Chapel. Family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2-4 and 6-8 P.M. at the funeral home. Pastor Tricia Elliott will officiate with burial to follow at Rose Lawn Cemetery in Perry.
Verlyn was born in Shiawassee Township on January 13, 1926, the son of Leon and Gertrude (Fuester) Drake. He graduated from Morrice High School and on September 1, 1946 he married Donna Bennett at Morrice United Metodist Church. He was a past member of Hidden Springs Retreat in Howell and a member of Morrice United Methodist Church, member of the Genesee Valley Two-Cylinder Club, enjoyed hunting, fishing and tractors. Verlyn worked for 33 years for General Motors Buick transmission plant in Flint.
He is survived by his son, Verlyn J. (Rebecca) Drake, Jr. of Manton, MI, daughters Suzanne Kay (Jack) Wood of Morrice, Joanne Laing of Caro, MI, grandchildren; Gregory & Monica Drake, Heather & Corey Palmer, Bridget & Carlos Gurerra, Jason & Jennifer Wood, Jeffrey Wood & his fiancee' Angie Surline, 7 great grandchildren, sister-in-law Ruth Drake of Houghton Lake, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Donna, brothers Ronald and Harlan and his parents. Memorials are suggested to Morrice Field of Dreams. Online condolences may be sent to www.watkinsfuneralhomes.com
